What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Cleveland Pools is a cherished historic lido offering a unique swimming experience, particularly for cold water enthusiasts. Visitors praise the beautiful setting, helpful staff, and the opportunity to swim in a restored heritage site. However, recent closures due to flooding and a perceived lack of communication from trustees have caused disappointment and frustration among the community.
"Beautiful pool(s) in a beautiful setting. I've been swimming at Cleveland Pools once or twice a week since soon after it reopened this year and count myself lucky to have such a gem nearby. The staff are lovely and helpful, the pool itself (the main pool - the smaller children's pool is closed for the winter) is always clean and a delight to swim in. There are well-maintained toilets and 12 changing cubicles (each big enough for a family in the summer) around the pool, and the room that used to be the ladies' pool is well worth a look to see the display boards about the pool's history. There are hot and cold showers poolside and of course always a lifeguard on hand. Weekday sessions in the winter are very calm (usually a handful of people per session) but hopefully enough to justify keeping the pool open in future winters! Saturday morning sessions seem to see 20+ swimmers each (the limit is currently 40 per session). I imagine it will be far busier in the summer.
The heat pump is due to kick in some time around April, although as it is drawing heat from the river, it's not expected to make the pool spa-level hot (approx. 28 °C is the current expected maximum, I believe). In the winters the pool is unheated and predicted to get below 5 °C in the coldest months. Currently, in early December, the water temperature is about 8 °C. I've seen fellow swimmers in anything from full wetsuits to standard swimming costumes, and staff are always happy to advise on and chat about kit (hats, neoprene gloves and socks, etc.) if needed.
Parking can be tricky (there is none available onsite, with the exception of two disabled bays for Blue Badge holders) and there is not much public transport nearby. Sometimes you find some free on street parking or paid parking a little way away, but count on at least a 10 minute walk. If all else fails, the nearby Morrisons offers 3 hours' free parking, but it is a 20 minute walk. Walking from the train or bus station takes around half an hour.
All in all, Cleveland Pools is a real pearl and I hope it becomes at least a bit better known and manages to stay open year-round for many more years to come!"

"Sadly the newly refurbished pool has been closed for months due to flooding. Doesn't look like this is going to be resolved anytime soon and likely to remain closed for the 2024 season. So disappointing 😞"

"Lovely Lido, shame its not open anymore. I think everone would benefit from a more transparent update on the works going to reopen the pools. As right now there is a lot of anger from residents and people who love the lido but are frustrated by this situation. I think there would be a lot more support if there was some sort of clear dialogue."

The History and Restoration of Cleveland Pools
The recent challenges faced by Cleveland Pools, including flooding that led to closures in early 2024, highlight the complexities of maintaining heritage sites. Community members have expressed frustration over the lack of communication regarding repair timelines and the legal battles that may be delaying the reopening. Despite these setbacks, the passion for this unique lido remains strong, with many hoping for its sustained operation and a more transparent approach from the trustees moving forward.
Visitors can still appreciate the pool's historical significance by exploring the display boards located in the former ladies' pool room. These exhibits offer a glimpse into the pool's past, detailing its evolution and importance to the local community. The architecture itself is a testament to Victorian-era leisure facilities, making a visit a journey back in time.

Navigating Parking and Access
