"I've visited the Cathedral for Choral services over the years, but today I had the opportunity to just wander around at my own pace and actually notice things I hadn't noticed before.
Although not a large Cathedral, Chichester is still impressive. Highlights include historic artwork and tapestries and Marc Chagall's stained glass window. There is a section of flooring showing Roman mosaics.
The bell tower stands separately to the Cathedral, which I think may be unique
The grounds are beautiful and there is a stall with cameras monitoring the progress of the resident falcons and their chicks."

A Tapestry of History and Art
Beyond its architectural grandeur, the Cathedral is a treasure trove of art. The Marc Chagall stained glass window, installed in the 1970s, is a modern masterpiece that provides a vibrant counterpoint to the ancient stonework. Beneath the floor, Roman mosaics offer a glimpse into the city's even deeper past. The tomb that inspired Philip Larkin's famous poem 'An Arundel Tomb' is another poignant artistic and literary highlight. These elements combine to make Chichester Cathedral a place of profound historical and artistic significance.
For those seeking a deeper understanding, free guided tours are highly recommended. These tours illuminate the stories behind the art, the architecture, and the people who have shaped the Cathedral's history. The free-standing medieval bell tower is also a unique feature, rarely found in English cathedrals, adding another layer of intrigue to the visitor experience. The presence of a falcon cam on the grounds adds a touch of modern wildlife interest, appealing to a broad range of visitors.
Experiencing the Cathedral's Atmosphere
One of the most delightful aspects for many is that entry is free, though donations are warmly welcomed. This accessibility encourages spontaneous visits and allows everyone to experience the Cathedral's beauty. The dog-friendly policy further enhances this welcoming atmosphere, allowing visitors to share their experience with their canine companions.
Beyond the main sanctuary, the serene gardens and the grounds surrounding the Cathedral provide additional spaces for contemplation. The unique feature of the resident falcons and their chicks, monitored via a public camera stall, adds an unexpected element of natural wonder to the visit. This blend of spiritual calm, historical depth, and natural interest contributes to a truly memorable experience.
