"On a first visit in July 2024, with my family. Wow, what an amazing place. Well, it's worth a visit if you are in the area.
Firstly, this is free, with a recommended donation. There is so much information and exhibits crammed into every available space. There is something for everyone. Historical people, building of the area with Roman encampments, etc... lots of art and reconstructions of period housing.
There are lots of stairs, and for some sections, there is a lift available for folks with reduced mobility. This will give you access to the upper ground floor and down into the visitor shop and cafe out at the back of the building.
It is possible that you may encounter real Roman soldiers on parade...well, school children dressed up on their field trips. A few seats dotted around to take the weight off. A very informative video at the start and the staff were very pleasant and helpful. I surprised myself how long I stayed as it was so interesting."
