What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors often praise Castle Bromwich Historic Gardens as a beautiful and well-maintained hidden gem, particularly for its family-friendly atmosphere and diverse plant collection. The volunteers are frequently commended for their friendly approach and dedication. However, some reviews note that the gardens can appear a bit tired during dry spells and suggest that admission prices could be more affordable for families.
"We visited last week as a family of 6 and it cost us just over £20 for 2 adults and 3 children, under 5's free. Most national trusts offer a discounted family pass, perhaps this could be introduced to make it more affordable.
The gardens are beautiful and very well kept, historic buildings have a lot of interesting information, volunteers are friendly and approachable and doing a fab job at maintaining the place. I would say it's a hidden gem in the middle of Castle Bromwich. My children loved the play areas and the archery lawn was perfect for them to run up and down on."
Inaayah B
"First time visiting with 2 kids. Nicely filled 2 hours and could have stayed longer. Not a particularly big site but lots of little areas of interest for kids and plenty of shade. Flowers looked a little tired from the hot dry spell we have experienced. Cafe was reasonably priced, although be warned, tea is by the mug (not pot) and gets made up for you. Would definitely come here again if we lived a little closer."
H Crouch
"Garden must have been fantastic in it's heyday but looking rather sad now, not helped by the very dry weather. Some interesting features but the plants were nothing special and I assumed they just don't have enough volunteers or funding to do it as well as it deserves."

A Haven for Nature Lovers and Garden Enthusiasts
The site also features a charming holly maze, providing a fun and engaging experience for both children and adults. Beyond the flora, the gardens are interspersed with historic buildings that add a layer of architectural interest and historical context. These elements combine to create a rich tapestry of natural beauty and heritage, making it a rewarding visit for those seeking a peaceful escape and a connection with nature.
While the gardens are beautiful, some reviews mention that the plants can appear a bit tired during very hot, dry spells, a common challenge for outdoor spaces. However, the ongoing efforts of the volunteers ensure the gardens remain a delightful place to explore year-round.
A Popular Venue for Celebrations and Events
Beyond weddings, the gardens also host a variety of other events. These can range from historical reenactments, like the commemoration of King Charles' coronation with historical monarchs, to musical performances by ensembles such as the BCMG wind trio. Art workshops, like cyanotype printing, and food festivals, such as those organized with Digbeth Dining Club, further diversify the calendar of activities, attracting a wide range of visitors.
These events often require advance booking, and tickets can typically be found on platforms like Eventbrite. The popularity of these events means that the gardens can become quite busy during these times, offering a different, more vibrant atmosphere compared to a regular visit.
Family-Friendly Activities and Experiences
Beyond the general play spaces, the gardens also host specific activities tailored for younger visitors. 'Tree Tots' sessions, for instance, are designed for children aged 1-5 and their grown-ups, offering nature play, sensory fun, and outdoor adventures. Furthermore, there's an incentive for children to win a free book, adding an educational and rewarding element to their visit.
While the gardens are generally well-received by families, it's worth noting that the entry fee structure might be a consideration for larger families, as under-5s are free but older children and adults have an admission cost. Nevertheless, the combination of open spaces, play facilities, and engaging activities makes it a highly recommended spot for family outings.
