Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate Bury Mount for its peaceful atmosphere, dog-friendly open spaces, and historical charm. While the motte itself is modest, the surrounding water meadows and the accessible spiral path offer a pleasant experience for a relaxed outing. Some may find the historical significance more appealing than the visual grandeur.

"Towcester was once the Roman town of Lactodorum. Edward the Elder had the town strengthened in 918 when Towcester was threatened by attack from the Danes. A motte was built in the N/E corner of the Roman town near to a ford over the River Tove most likely to control the old road to Northampton. The area around Towcester was part of an extensive royal estate and it is believed that the castle was built by the crown in the late 11th century. The motte was surrounded by a water filled moat and there is evidence of more than one bailey's but the area was remodelled by Prince Rupert during the ECW and many of the earlier earthworks are gone. Trees were planted on the motte and gardens were created further altering the earthworks but in 2008 it was cleared and is now covered in grass. A pathway has been built to spiral around the motte to the top and is free to visit."

A Glimpse into History

Bury Mount is a significant historical site in Towcester, originally a motte-and-bailey castle built in the late 11th century, likely by the crown. Its strategic location near a ford over the River Tove and within an extensive royal estate highlights its importance in controlling the old road to Northampton. The motte was once surrounded by a water-filled moat and evidence suggests multiple baileys, though much of the original earthworks have been altered over time.

During the English Civil War, Prince Rupert remodelled the area, further changing the landscape. Later, trees were planted on the motte and gardens were created, obscuring its original form. Fortunately, in 2008, the site was cleared and is now a grassy mound, preserving its historical essence while making it accessible to the public. The spiral pathway to the top and the informative date stamps offer a tangible connection to its past. Reddit

Visitors often note that while the mount itself might not be as imposing as other castles, the historical context and the surrounding natural beauty make it a worthwhile visit. The blend of medieval history with the peaceful water meadows creates a unique atmosphere for exploration and reflection.

Exploring the Surroundings

Beyond the central motte, the surrounding fields and paths at Bury Mount are a major draw for visitors. These areas are described as a 'vast green aware for walking and chilling in,' offering ample space for relaxation and recreation.
