The old Manor House sits next to Burton Agnes House but pre dates it by a mere 500 years. It housed various Lords over the years who lived in one large space along with their family and other members of the household. . . . #normans #eastyorkshire #holiday #manorhouse #englishcountryside #

What Travellers Say

(567 reviews)

Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate the historical significance of the Old Manor House, particularly its rare Norman undercroft, and the beauty of the surrounding gardens and maze. However, some find the manor itself shows signs of age and could benefit from restoration. The cafe experience has also received mixed reviews regarding service and seating.

"I guess you could say that the building has seen better days and nowhere near as impressive as the Hall , but you must remember that it is far older, parts of it dating from the early 12th century. It is owned and run by English Heritage and is free to enter, I hope one day it could be restored to a higher standard. Well worth a look though."

Martin King

"I love coming here 😍😁 i like to look around the garden the maze is pretty neat. I like to go in the forest they have a snowdrop and bluebells on that time of year. The cafe is nice the food and tea has been spot on. There is another option if don't want to go in the cafe they serve you hot food just outside the cafe."

Luke Harrison

"For English heritage members you can actually enter for free but you have to talk to the staff at the gardens. They have a policy of not letting people enjoy the cafe’s food if you do not buy ticket entry but luckily they allowed us this time. The scones were nice.

The Architectural Journey: Old Manor vs. Hall

Burton Agnes presents a fascinating contrast between its two main historical structures. The Old Manor House is a rare surviving example of a Norman manor house, built between 1170 and 1180. Its most striking feature is the well-preserved undercroft, characterized by its vaulted ceilings and sturdy, carved columns, offering a tangible connection to the 12th century. The building also retains original medieval elements like a spiral staircase and limestone masonry, though it was later encased in brick during the 18th century, serving a more utilitarian purpose like a laundry. Reddit

In contrast, Burton Agnes Hall is a spectacular Elizabethan country house, designed by Robert Smythson, a renowned architect of prodigy houses. It's celebrated for its Elizabethean architecture, featuring elegant bow windows and intricate detailing. While the Old Manor House offers a glimpse into early medieval life, the Hall showcases the grandeur and sophistication of the Tudor era. Many visitors are captivated by the Hall's beauty, with some calling it 'The Perfect English House'. Instagram+2

This juxtaposition allows visitors to appreciate the evolution of domestic architecture and living styles across several centuries, from the functional robustness of the Norman period to the refined aesthetics of the Elizabethan age. It’s a journey through English heritage, highlighting different eras of design and social history. Instagram+1

Exploring the Grounds: Gardens, Maze, and Forest

Beyond the historic buildings, the gardens and grounds of Burton Agnes are a significant draw for visitors. These areas offer a more relaxed and interactive experience, appealing to all ages. The maze is a perennial favorite, providing a fun challenge and a sense of playful adventure. Reddit

During spring, the grounds are particularly noted for their snowdrops and bluebells, creating a beautiful natural spectacle. Visitors often praise the well-maintained gardens, which provide a serene environment for a stroll.
