🏰 Burgh Castle: Norfolk’s Best-Preserved Roman Fort (which doesn’t mean much) Burgh Castle is one of the best surviving Roman forts in Britain. Probably. Mostly, it’s just a big wall. Built in the 3rd century as part of the Saxon Shore defences, it was meant to stop Saxon raiders - until the Romans abandoned Britain and the Saxons (and pretty much everyone else after them) moved in anyway. Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Burgh Castle for its impressive, well-preserved Roman walls and stunning views over Breydon Water. It's a free-to-enter historical site offering a great walk, though the car park requires card payment and the paths can be muddy. Some wish for more detailed information on-site.

"Called Saxon Shore Forts these fortifications were built by the Romans to protect the shores against Saxon invaders. They were mainly built around the Southern and Eastern coast of Britain which was under the greatest threat of Saxon invaders. Burgh was one of nine forts built in the 3rd century, it was built on a slope overlooking the estuary of the River Waveney. A motte and bailey castle was built inside the fort but it was levelled in 1839, other shore forts also had castles built into them at Portchester and Pevensey. The fort is rectangular and three of it's walls still stand with the Western wall gone, the nearby church has stone from the fort reused into it's walls. It is in the care of English Heritage and is free to visit."

"This is the remains of a Roman coastal fort.

Just off the road is a controlled parking area. It no longer accepts cash, so you have to use a credit or debit card.

From the main parking area, it's about a 5 minute walk through a lane to get to the first of a number of information points.

From the second point, it's about a 10 minute walk to the walls of the fort. As it's a circular route, you can go either way, possibly go out in one direction, return in the other.

You will have to follow the path that runs down the side of a field to actually reach the walls of the fort. I didn't find it too difficult, but it might be challenging for those with mobility issues, and you will need good footwear, as the ground will get wet & muddy.

The walk is suitable for dogs, but you need to keep them on a lead throughout.

The walls are an impressive sight even as you approach. The fort appears to be designed to allow passengers and cargo to be brought in without exposing them to attack.

This is a part of Roman history that I had not previously heard of or seen. It is definitely worth the effort to get her, although I would suggest that it needs a bit more in the way of information points and useful background details."

"Would highly recommend as this is a no cost activity. It would be great to have visited the Time and Tide museum as it really provides great history that makes the fort come alive."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Roman History of Burgh Castle

Burgh Castle, originally known as 'Gariannonum', was a vital Roman fort established in the 3rd century AD. It was part of the 'Saxon Shore' network of fortifications designed to defend Roman Britain's eastern coastline from sea-borne raiders, primarily the Saxons and Franks. The fort's strategic location at the confluence of the rivers Yare, Waveney, and Bure allowed it to control access to the interior waterways of East Anglia. TikTokInstagram

The fort was built with massive stone walls, some of which still stand to an impressive height today, showcasing exceptional Roman engineering. Three of the original four walls remain largely intact, with the western wall showing signs of collapse and quarrying for building materials in later centuries. The scale of the construction, with walls up to 6 feet thick, highlights its defensive importance. InstagramReddit

After the Roman withdrawal from Britain in the early 5th century, the fort's military significance waned. However, it continued to be occupied and adapted by later inhabitants, including the Saxons. Evidence of its long history can be seen in the surrounding landscape and the remnants of later structures, such as the nearby St. Peter and St. Paul's church with its distinctive round tower. Instagram

Exploring the Landscape and Wildlife

The area surrounding Burgh Castle offers beautiful natural scenery, characterized by the expansive salt marshes and the wide estuary of Breydon Water. This unique environment is a haven for wildlife, particularly birdlife. Visitors often report seeing a variety of waterfowl and waders, making it a popular spot for birdwatching. InstagramReddit

During the warmer months, the landscape comes alive with wildflowers, adding a splash of color to the ancient ruins. Many visitors have also noted the abundance of dragonflies, creating a magical atmosphere, especially on a sunny day. The gentle breeze and the open skies contribute to a sense of tranquility, making it a perfect place for a peaceful walk. Instagram

The walk from the car park to the fort itself is part of the experience, leading you through fields and offering glimpses of the surrounding countryside. While the path can be muddy, the natural beauty and the chance to spot local fauna make the effort worthwhile. It's a great place to connect with nature and appreciate the historical significance of the site simultaneously. Reddit
