Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Severn Valley Railway for its authentic heritage experience, with many highlighting the joy of steam trains and the friendly staff. The picturesque journey and well-maintained stations are frequently mentioned positives. However, a few reviews note occasional rudeness from some volunteers and the importance of double-checking booking times to avoid missing out.

"Visited on Monday 28 July 2025, and great to see that the SVR had reopened fully just 3 days earlier following the landslip that occurred at the end of January. An absolute pleasure to see the arrival of the Flying Scotsman; what a beauty, and a credit to all those who maintain it.

The Railwayman’s Arms pub was also open for the occasion; a great beer selection and a super friendly barman. A lovely, well-appointed building with great memorabilia.

The station itself is also well maintained and most of the staff are great. I did, however, get very rudely shouted at by a volunteer platform member for accidentally ‘overstepping’ a tape line that was actually missing. No need for overbearing, abusive behaviour in this day-and-age. I decided not to make an issue of it, but he shouldn’t be dealing with the public."

"We had an absolutely wonderful family day at the Severn Valley Railway! We started at Bridgnorth Station on a diesel train and stopped off to visit The Engine House Visitor & Education Centre, which was fantastic (I’ll be reviewing that separately). After exploring, we continued on to Bewdley before catching the train back to Bridgnorth.

My three-and-a-half-year-old is usually obsessed with tractors and dinosaurs, but trains—especially steam engines—are his real passion. Watching him completely absorbed in the experience was truly special. From walking across the tracks when the gates were closed, to spotting the steam engines and peering out the windows as they arrived, his excitement was infectious.

The staff throughout were friendly, helpful, and attentive. At one point, I accidentally left my mobile phone on the train, and the guards quickly recovered it for me. Their professionalism and kindness really made the day smooth and stress-free.

If you love steam engines—or just want a fun, family-friendly day out—I can’t recommend the Severn Valley Railway highly enough. We would come back in a heartbeat!"

"We booked the Freedom of the line tickets which means you can get on and off the trains all day. We booked online as it was cheaper than purchasing on the day and it’s easy as the tickets can be added to your wallet on your phone. We went for an event celebrating diesel but were pleasantly surprised when our train from Kidderminster to Bridgnorth turned out to be a steam engine, although there were many diesel engines too. Lovely picturesque journey, even got to see the camels on our way past the Safari Park. There are also great real ale pubs on both Kidderminster and Bridgnorth stations. We had a break in Highly where there is a small museum and where the mail carriage from The Great Train Robbery is on display, you can go in it and look around. A great day out for all ages."
