Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Mendip Hills and Cheddar Gorge for their breathtaking natural beauty, dramatic landscapes, and rich history. The cliff-top walks and cave explorations are frequently highlighted as unforgettable experiences. While the area is generally well-loved, some visitors note that parking and entry fees for specific attractions can add up.

"Visiting the Mendip Hills and Cheddar Gorge was nothing short of awe-inspiring. Nestled in the heart of Somerset, this area offers a perfect blend of dramatic natural landscapes, fascinating history, and outdoor adventure.

Cheddar Gorge itself is truly one of England’s most stunning natural landmarks. The towering limestone cliffs, winding road, and panoramic views from the cliff-top walks are simply unforgettable. Whether you're an avid hiker or just someone who enjoys a scenic stroll, the trails around the gorge offer something for everyone. The walk to the top is well worth the effort—once there, you’re rewarded with sweeping views across the Somerset Levels and beyond.

The Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is equally captivating. Rolling hills, charming countryside, and hidden caves make this a paradise for nature lovers and photographers alike. There’s a peacefulness here that feels like a true escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

Cheddar village itself is full of character, with its quaint shops, cozy cafés, and of course, the famous Cheddar cheese tasting opportunities. Don’t miss the chance to explore the caves—Gough’s Cave and Cox’s Cave are both fascinating and full of prehistoric history.

Whether you're here for a day trip or a longer stay, the Mendip Hills and Cheddar Gorge provide an unforgettable experience. It’s a perfect destination for families, couples, or solo adventurers. Highly recommended for anyone looking to reconnect with nature and discover one of the UK’s most iconic landscapes.

Parking can be found either in the village or around the winding main road, payment necessary, toilets can also be found in the main village free of charge. I would recommend taking a good pair of boots and plenty of water- theres lots of uneven ground with plenty of opportunities for slips, trips and falls. Well worth the danger though. You do not need to purchase tickets to explore the hills as they can be accessed at many different points, but would recommend planning a route or having some familiarity with the area and different possible routes. I would also recommend buying tickets to the cave etc to enter through Jacobs ladder and do the 3 mile circular hike, but as stated, this isn’t necessary if you dont want to.

I was lucky enough to be Engaged on the top of one of those beautiful mountain cliff tops, and would suggest anyone in love with someone who also enjoys spending some precious 1-1 time together in nature do the same. Proud to say ‘YES!’ with the goats and falcons watching."

"A pleasant place to visit and stretch your legs. Pay parking is at hand near the attractions and free parking is avalable a little bit up the vally/gorge.
One price covers admission to the sights. On a hot day, the caves are pleasantly cool. If you take a close look at the formations in the cave, you may enjoy some unique formations in the stones.
The trail up Jacob's ladder does require the will and ability to climb "a lot" of steps. But the steps are well made with handrails, and after a few more steps, you find yourself at the top of a small lookout tower.
After the tower vew, if you are motivated and have the time, the trail circles the gorge for a county walk with views to enjoy."

"Just a short drive from Bristol, the Mendip Hills National Landscape offers an unforgettable escape into nature. This Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty lives up to its name, with sweeping views, dramatic limestone cliffs, rolling green hills, and peaceful woodlands. Whether you’re a casual walker, avid hiker, or cyclist, the Mendip Hills provide a perfect mix of adventure and tranquility.

One of the highlights is Cheddar Gorge, a stunning natural wonder that’s both geologically fascinating and visually awe-inspiring. Nearby caves, such as Gough’s Cave, add an extra layer of exploration and intrigue. The area also includes charming villages like Priddy and Blagdon, where you can enjoy a cozy pub meal or a cup of tea with a view.

The walking trails are well-marked and vary in difficulty, catering to all levels of outdoor enthusiasts. Wildlife lovers will also appreciate the range of birds and wildflowers throughout the area.

What truly sets the Mendip Hills apart is the sense of peace and vastness—it’s a refreshing break from city life. Whether you go for a day trip or a weekend retreat, this landscape leaves a lasting impression. A must-visit for anyone in or near Bristol."
