What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Big Pit Halt for its authentic and impactful underground mining experience, highlighting the knowledgeable guides and the fascinating Pithead Baths exhibition. The free entry is a major plus, though some find the station area and facilities like the cafe to be in need of better upkeep. Booking ahead is recommended to avoid queues, especially with school groups.
"The surroundings are beautiful, the museum is great, the station is like the poor family member that got forgotten, bit of a dump, all broken, smashed windows. Really lets the attraction down."

"It's a popular place (with schools) we failed to go on a day when there weren't multiple groups of children. They are very well organised at the exhibition and will keep you separate from the school groups. This can affect the waiting time and ours was about an hour. The tour underground is revealing and you have a good sense of the terrible conditions the early miners faced. Probably not a good idea if you are claustrophobic, the is the King Coal mining experience as an alternative. There is plenty else to see, my favourite was the Pithead Baths exhibition. You pay £5 for parking (all day) and the complex is free to visit, you can book ahead for a particular time slot but will pay more for this option. There is a café and toilets on site."

"Great experience, we were surprised that this attraction is not advertised more ? It's not a long journey but the scenery is beautiful & the staff (all volunteers) were friendly & helpful with good knowledge of the heritage of the railway & engines 👏👍."
