"Free parking, great area just walk the dog great views just out side Beverly
Would recommend to stop for a walk."

"One of the iconic landmarks of the Beverley skyline! Makes for good photos, especially at sunset or on the rare occasion that the Aurora is visible. It's a good obvious meeting place if you're going for a walk on the Westwood. It's never very busy from my experience. It's also nice that there's a bench almost all the way around it, which you can sit and watch the sunset! The only thing that's missing is being able to go inside it, but I think this stopped being an option decades ago. Definitely worth going up to and having a look if you're in the area though."

"Nice mill tower with fields to walk through, unfortunately dog walkers have dogs off lead running about and sh1tting without them picking it up. Apart from that just watch where you walk keep in short grass and pleasant walk"

The History and Significance of the Black Mill
While the mill's operational life has long since ended, its presence on the Westwood continues to inspire. It serves as a focal point for walks and a popular meeting spot. The lack of detailed historical information on-site means that visitors often research its past independently, adding a layer of personal discovery to their visit. The mill stands as a testament to the ingenuity of past industries and the enduring beauty of the Yorkshire landscape.
Interestingly, the Westwood was once home to other windmills, with the remains of another significantly reduced mill located near the golf course clubhouse. This suggests a history of wind-powered industry in the area, making the Black Mill a key piece of this historical puzzle. The contrast between the past attempts at wind power and current discussions about renewable energy adds a contemporary relevance to this historic structure.
Exploring Beverley Westwood
The terrain is varied, making it ideal for leisurely walks and enjoying the natural scenery. Visitors often comment on the peaceful atmosphere, particularly during off-peak hours. The presence of cows in some areas, utilizing a water tank nearby, adds to the rural charm. While the Black Mill is a central feature, the entire Westwood provides a sense of open space and tranquility just outside the bustling town of Beverley.
For those interested in art and nature, the Westwood has inspired local artists. Sketchbooks are often brought along to capture the beauty of the Black Mill and the surrounding landscape, blending creativity with the outdoor experience. This connection between the natural environment and artistic expression is a recurring theme for visitors.
