Despite what most people think, the Bishop's Bridge (Pont del Bisbe), one of Barcelona's most photographed treasures, is relatively "new". It was built for the Barcelona International Exposition in 1929! The bridge was designed in the neo-gothic style by architect Joan Rubió I Bellver, who had a plan to demolish all non-gothic buildings around the cathedral area and replace them with neo-gothic o...

Reviews Summary

Bishop's Bridge is celebrated as Norwich's oldest and one of the UK's most ancient bridges still in public use, lauded for its historical significance and medieval architecture. Visitors appreciate its peaceful riverside ambiance, especially in the evenings, and the convenience of nearby pubs. While its historical depth is a major draw, some may find the immediate surroundings less developed than modern attractions.

"Attractive arched bridge dating back to the mid 14th century, Norwich's oldest bridge and one of the UK's oldest bridges remaining in public use.
The bridge has an interesting history, having survived attack by Kett's revolutionary forces in the 16th century, and early 20th century plans to widen the river crossing to improve traffic flow and flood protection. With a pub right alongside, this bridge is a good waypoint on the riverside walk."

Andrew Thomas

"I often go across this historical bridge while out dog walking. It was built in 1340 and has survived to this day. Not bad for a medieval bridge. There aren't many left unfortunately. It's near a couple of pubs, Lollards pit and Red Lion Bishopsgate which is handy to know."

Patricia Phillips

"The oldest bridge in Norwich and one of the oldest bridges in the UK still in use.
Over this bridge trundled the huge and grand procession that was Queen Elizabeth the first on her progress to Norwich in 1578.

Also crossing this bridge in lonely, tragic processions, were Lollards sentenced to death for religious heresy. They were walked or dragged across this bridge to be burnt alive in a chalk pit just opposite.

Robert Kett fought for control of this bridge in the great Norfolk rebellion of 1549. With the destruction of the monasteries and the enclosure of common land, the poor had been left impoverished. Kett, though reasonably wealthy himself, recognised their grievances as just and lead the "rebels" in a considered and conscientious manner.
The rebellion failed and Kett was imprisoned in the Tower of London and sent back to Norwich to be hanged from the walls of Norwich Castle.

Kett unselfishly gave up a very comfortable life to lead the poor of Norfolk in their struggle against famine and injustice, he must have known his actions would result in a torturous deàth. He is my candidate, to join his fellow Norfolk patriot, Admiral Nelson in Trafalgar Square, on the empty 4th plinth."
