What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Big Sand Beach is widely loved for its stunning natural beauty, expansive golden sands, and breathtaking sunsets. Visitors praise the adjacent Sands campsite for its excellent facilities and family-friendly amenities, including a playpark and pump track. The beach's tidal nature offers dynamic scenery, though it requires awareness. The primary drawback mentioned is the potential for midges, especially during calm weather.
"Beach is on the Sands caravan and camping site. Big clean beach, wide tidal difference in it. Camp site is great, lots of pitches, lots of electric pitches. Plenty of caravan space, fixed caravans and wigwams available too. Decent toilet facilities with plenty of showers. Closed once a day for cleaning. Enclosed spaces for dishwashing and hiding from the weather if needed, with plenty sockets for charging. Freezers for ice packs available in these enclosed spaces.
Lots of routes through the sand dunes to the beach, and space on top of the dunes for admiring the views. Some wonderful sunsets from here.
We come once a year, and have done since I was a child. Improvements made every year. Phone signal has drastically improved in the area. Local village isn't far, campsite shop is well enough stocked if you want to stay put. New Games room with free table football and table tennis. Pool table and air hockey available. TV with Disney plus and comfy couches in there too. On site takeaway van, and restaurant/bar. Not cheap but well priced for the area as a whole.
Decent play park that is regularly updated.
Kids love the place, Rocks to climb on, a burn (small river) to cross or dam, good clean sand in the beach and the central park on site.
Would recommend the site and beach to anyone remotely interested in camping.
Must warn about the dreaded midge though, when the wind drops they are rife. Similar across any highland area, just worth being prepared for them. The "smidge" brand of midge repellant works well for me here."

"An absolute gem of a place!😍👌probably one of if not the best set up I've been too. Some of the pitches on top of the sand dunes are incredible! The views over to torridon and skye along with a very long amazing sandy beach with crystal clear waters is very hard to beat! Theres a good wee park for kids aswell as a very good wee pump track! The shop stocks lovely food straight from the farm, theres also a small restaurant on site along with a takeaway hut and plentiful toilets and shower blocks even has a bloody bath!😱 great base for some stunning mountain bike rides into torridon! Only major drawback of this place is the midges can be absolutely horrendous! So be prepared! Dont let that put you off a visit though!👌"

The Magic of Big Sand Beach's Tides
This tidal phenomenon also creates interesting patterns and textures on the sand, which can be a delight for photographers. The exposed seabed at low tide can sometimes reveal interesting marine life or rock formations. Remember to wear appropriate footwear, as the sand can be soft and wet near the water's edge, and rocky patches might be exposed during low tide.
Planning your visit around the tides can significantly enhance your experience. Low tide offers the most expansive beach, while high tide brings the water closer to the dunes, creating a different, more intimate atmosphere. Always prioritize safety and be aware of your surroundings, especially with children.
Navigating the Highland Midges
Several sources recommend specific midge repellents. The brand 'Smidge' is frequently mentioned as being effective. Applying repellent generously, especially to exposed skin, is crucial. Wearing long sleeves and trousers, particularly during dawn and dusk, can also help.
Timing your visit can also make a difference. Midges are less active on windy days. If you're camping, choosing a pitch with some natural windbreak or being prepared to retreat indoors when they become active is advisable. Despite the potential for midges, most visitors agree that the beauty of Big Sand Beach and the surrounding area makes it worth the effort to manage them.
Family Fun at Sands Campsite
Beyond the playpark, the campsite boasts a pump track, which is a hit with kids who enjoy bikes and scooters. This provides an excellent outlet for energy and adds another layer of fun to a family holiday. The proximity of these facilities to the beach means families can easily transition between beach activities and campsite entertainment.
Reviewers highlight the overall setup of the campsite as being excellent, with pitches offering incredible views, some situated right on top of the sand dunes. The combination of the stunning beach, the engaging activities for children, and the quality of the campsite facilities makes Big Sand Beach a highly recommended destination for family adventures.
