The historic charm of the lighthouse, combined with comfortable rooms and delicious breakfasts, makes for a truly memorable and atmospheric stay. Some minor points of feedback relate to the stairs within the lighthouse and the limited dining options on-site.
"Magnificent experience to stay in lighthouse for 2 nights. The room is spacious and England old style and feeling comfy. The green space, the landscape, white cliff, birling gap, lighthouse top and sea breeze makes me feeling relaxed and slowed down. Good place for retreat and back to nature. It is close to Eastbourne and u can find some good restaurant especially the French restaurant near pier."

"I cannot recommend Belle Tout Lighthouse enough. Everything about the place is amazing. The views from the Lantern room are stunning, and there is so much more to the Lighthouse than what you see from the outside. The interior is spotless, and fitted to the highest standards, with lovely clean rooms and fantastic views. The breakfasts are delicious, and the complimentary drink each evening is a lovely touch. The manager Ian is a wonderful host, and his breakfasts are second to none. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Very atmospheric, and out of the ordinary in every way."

"We have just returned from a wonderful stay at Belle Tout. Rooms are clean and lovely with exceptional views across the downs and towards Beachy Head one way and Seven sisters the other. Breakfasts were amazing . Going up and down the lighthouse stairs to get to the lounge, lighthouse and dining room was surreal and views breathtaking. My partner said he couldn't have had a better place to stay as a birthday present. Thank you Julie and Denise for a wonderful stay .. we'll be back x"

Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Consider visiting the nearby 'Beachy Head Story' museum for interactive exhibits about the area's maritime past. The walks along the South Downs Way can be adapted for shorter legs, focusing on accessible viewpoints. Packing a picnic to enjoy with the stunning sea views is a great family activity. Just be mindful of cliff edges and supervise children closely.
🚶♀️ Hikers and Walkers
Plan your route in advance, considering the length and difficulty. Many enjoy a circular walk from Eastbourne or a point-to-point hike. Wear sturdy walking boots and bring plenty of water and snacks, as facilities can be sparse along certain stretches. The ever-changing weather means being prepared for sun, wind, and rain.
📸 Photographers and Content Creators
Aim for sunrise or sunset to capture the most dramatic light. The Seven Sisters cliffs offer a breathtaking backdrop. Consider bringing a wide-angle lens for sweeping landscapes and a telephoto lens for capturing details of the lighthouse and coastline. Be mindful of the weather, as dramatic skies can add to the photographic appeal.

The Remarkable History of Belle Tout Lighthouse
However, coastal erosion posed a significant threat to its existence. In a remarkable feat of engineering in 1999, the lighthouse was moved 17 meters inland to save it from tumbling into the sea. This move cemented its status as a beacon of resilience and maritime history.
Beyond its navigational purpose, Belle Tout has also served as a tea shop, a family home, and even a filming location for the BBC mini-series 'The Go-Between'. Today, it stands as a unique and atmospheric B&B, offering guests a chance to stay within its historic walls and soak in its storied past.
Exploring the Surrounding Coastal Wonders
One of the most iconic sights nearby is the Seven Sisters cliffs, a series of chalk cliffs stretching along the coastline. These stunning natural formations are a photographer's dream and a must-see for any visitor. The walk between Belle Tout and the Seven Sisters is particularly rewarding, offering continuous breathtaking views.
Just a short distance away is Beachy Head, home to the tallest chalk sea cliff in Britain and the famous Beachy Head Lighthouse. The area is a designated country park, offering well-maintained paths, information centers like 'The Beachy Head Story', and numerous viewpoints to appreciate the sheer scale and beauty of the landscape.
A Unique Staycation Experience
Guests consistently rave about the exceptional views from the rooms and the common areas, particularly the lantern room. Waking up to the sight of the English Channel and the rolling hills of the South Downs is an unforgettable part of the experience. The hosts are often praised for their attentiveness and the delicious breakfasts they serve.
This is more than just a place to sleep; it's an opportunity to immerse yourself in a piece of maritime heritage and enjoy a peaceful retreat. The combination of the unique accommodation, stunning natural surroundings, and the sense of being on the 'edge of the world' makes it a highly recommended destination for a memorable staycation.
