"Absolutely fantastic exhibition - one of the best curated museum exhibitions I've been to (and I go to a far few) - excellent mix of the geology, human history, current plants and animals, all made accessible but never dumbed down, and written with such a lovely mix of poetry and science. Lots of activities good for kids, especially a nice easel set up at the gorgeous view. Also, a wide range of nature related and local interest books. The staff seemed friendly and approachable too."

Lycopodiella

"A really nice, small museum detailing the history of Beachy Head and containing finds from around the area. There is a window in the museum and on a clear day they say you can see Brighton - there's binoculars provided to try! When I went it was overcast/misty so I couldn't see Brighton, but I enjoyed trying.

The museum itself is quite small but has plenty of things to see in it. There is lots of information accompanying the artefacts, and there's a small gift shop where you can buy souvenirs.

A great little stop off on my trip to Eastbourne, I'd recommend it. The staff were lovely and friendly too."

The Geology and History of Beachy Head

Beachy Head is renowned for its dramatic white chalk cliffs, which are part of the South Downs National Park. These cliffs are formed from the fossilized remains of marine organisms and have been shaped by erosion over millions of years. The visitor centre delves into this fascinating geological history, explaining how the landscape was formed and continues to evolve. TikTok

Human history at Beachy Head stretches back thousands of years, with evidence of Neolithic settlements and Roman activity. The area has also played a role in maritime history, with the iconic Beachy Head Lighthouse and the Belle Tout Lighthouse serving as crucial navigational aids. The visitor centre showcases artifacts and stories from shipwrecks, wartime events, and the lives of the coastguards and lighthouse keepers who served here. TikTok+1

In 1929, the local community rallied to purchase thousands of acres of downland around Beachy Head to prevent development, ensuring its preservation for future generations. This act of conservation is celebrated and highlighted at the visitor centre, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to protect this unique coastal environment. TikTok
