What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find Bailey Hill Mold Castle to be a free, historical site with a pleasant park atmosphere, featuring a playground and mature trees. However, many note the very steep inclines and slippery walkways, making it less accessible for some and a bit disappointing for those expecting a traditional castle structure.
"At the very top of Mold High Street is Mold Castle. There is no castle building any more, just the remains of an old motte and bailey structure with a motte at the top (where the original stronghold would have been) and two baileys (flat platforms where there would have been dwellings) on two lower levels. The lower bailey now has a great playground for small kids and the upper bailey has a flat lawn with well kept flower borders. For tree lovers there are some beautiful mature beeches on the top, holly trees and a magnificent sweet chestnut with spiral patterns in its bark on the upper bailey level.
The hills are very steep, so it would be a challenge for disabled people. But this is also why it is a great place for runners to practice hill sprints!"

"Remains of a motte and bailey castle built on a natural hillock by Robert de Montalt and first mentioned in 1146. The motte 10-14m tall of which traces of masonry have been found has an inner and outer bailey to the South. The area has been used as a park since 1792 and has been altered due to a bowling green and tennis courts being built on the site. It is free to visit."
