Reviews Summary

Visitors find Ayot St Lawrence Old Church to be a fascinating historical site with a unique charm, particularly its ruined flint stone walls and peaceful cemetery. However, many note the frustration of locked gates, requiring visitors to climb over to access the interior, which can be a deterrent for some. The picturesque village setting and nearby pub are also frequently praised.

"Nice little ruins but unfortunately it is closed 🔐 and locked you are "allowed to go in " but for that you need to climb trough the gate or walls which is well can look funny as other people walk past you...I don't know why there isn't any little gate or something to explore. I drove there for 25 min just to get informed it was "locked"."

"The ruins of the original St Lawrence Church are a Grade II* listed building and date back to the 12th century.

The church was partially demolished in 1775 by Sir Lionel Lyde, a wealthy tobacco merchant, a director of the Bank of England and lord of the manor. He had decided to replace the church with a new church, as a feature to be viewed from his country mansion, but apparently without informing the bishop. The bishop ordered the demolition of the old church to stop; Sir Lionel complied but continued with his vanity project and made no effort to restore the old church.

The remains of the old church are a lovely feature of this picturesque village."

"Great place to visit if you like historical places no longer in use. Shame the day we visited the gates were locked. Have visited before and wandered around the ruins and old cemetery, got some fab photos somewhere."

The Controversial Demolition

The ruins of Ayot St Lawrence Old Church are a poignant reminder of a rather eccentric historical decision. In 1775, Sir Lionel Lyde, a wealthy merchant and Bank of England director, decided the existing 12th-century church was not aesthetically pleasing enough from his country mansion. He ordered its partial demolition, much to the chagrin of the bishop, to create a picturesque ruin as a landscape feature. Reddit

Despite the bishop's orders to halt the demolition, Lyde complied but made no effort to restore the old church. Instead, he proceeded with building a new church nearby, further cementing the ruins' status as a vanity project. This act of historical vandalism, while controversial, has left behind a unique and evocative site for visitors to explore today. Reddit

The broken flint stone walls are a key feature, adding to the charm and historical character of the ruins. Visitors often find the atmosphere peaceful and fascinating, making it a worthwhile stop for history buffs and photographers alike. Reddit

Navigating Access and Exploration

Visiting Ayot St Lawrence Old Church comes with a unique challenge: access. Many visitors report that the gates to the church ruins are frequently locked. This often necessitates climbing over the gates or walls to gain entry, which can be a humorous or slightly awkward experience for some. Reddit

While this might deter some, those willing to make the effort often find it rewarding. The opportunity to wander freely among the ancient stones and explore the old cemetery is a significant draw. It's advisable to wear appropriate footwear if you plan on climbing. Reddit

Photography enthusiasts will find the ruins particularly appealing. The textures of the old stone, the play of light and shadow, and the overall sense of history provide ample opportunities for stunning shots. Visiting during the 'golden hour' around sunset is highly recommended for capturing the most atmospheric images. TikTok
