"Staffed by very friendly and helpful volunteers, it's an interesting place to visit. You can wander around as you choose, although better signage may be needed...I'll go again sometime, if only explore the places I missed.
I was advised that the best time to visit is the last Sunday of every month, when the winding engine is operational and the pit railway does passenger runs on the site's narrow gauge railway.
There is an on-site car park and plenty of picnic tables scattered around."

"I brought my 3 children aged 5-11 here. We had a lovely talk with a gentleman called Stewart who told us all about his time working in the mines. I could listen to him for hours. It was amazing to see what sort of machinery was used to cultivate the coal and how little room they had down there.

They have a tribute to 5 miners that died which was emotional to see.

I would recommend visiting on the last Sunday of the month as they have the engine running. It's free to enter but donations are welcome"

"If you are remotely interested in local history, engineering, and mining you must visit this place ! They have all sorts of mining engineering from pit props, wagons to underground locos . Plus a surviving pit head gantry, a working engine room (runs on last Sunday of month), a pit head area for lamps and safety gear, a miners cottage and a working railway (see timetable online). There is a tea room and shop. But the volunteers make the place! They are so helpful and knowledgeable. They make the place. There is also a very poignant display of 5 pairs of miners shoes near the pithead in memory to 5 miners who lost their lives in an explosion in 1939.
The museum is free, but PLEASE donate as they need the donations to run it.
Fantastic place and going back to see the engine running!"
