The Tenantry Column stands as a testament to the relationship between the Duke of Northumberland and his tenants. Erected in 1816, it was a gesture of gratitude from the farmers, mine owners, and factory owners who benefited from increased profits during the Napoleonic Wars. As prices for their products rose due to army demands, so too did their rents. However, following the peace of 1815 and a subsequent economic depression, the Duke's tenants were relieved when he reduced their rents. This act of benevolence inspired them to collectively commission and erect the column in his honor.

The monument itself is a striking Doric column, reaching an impressive 83 feet (25 meters) in height. It is crowned with a proud lion en passant, a heraldic symbol often associated with the Percy family, Dukes of Northumberland. At its base, four stone lions add to the monument's imposing presence and have been noted as a particular point of fascination for younger visitors.

While the column is a significant historical landmark, it's important to note that it is primarily an outdoor monument for viewing. Visitors have observed that the column is locked and not accessible for climbing, meaning its grandeur is best appreciated from the surrounding parkland. The location also offers pleasant views towards Barter Books and into Alnwick town, making it a worthwhile stop for a brief appreciation of local history and architecture.
