What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the Stairway to Heaven's breathtaking views and challenging yet rewarding nature. Many appreciate the well-developed trail and the opportunity for camping under a spectacular starry sky. However, the extreme heat and the demanding physical effort are significant drawbacks for some, emphasizing the need for thorough preparation.
"Stairway to Heaven, the Right Bank:
Rocks and stairs all the way. It is very developed, easy to follow the signs and it has several resting areas along the route. You will also see solar lights, but most of them are broken or don't work, so better to have a flashlight with you if it gets dark.
I believe it is great for camping, I wish I had a tent with me. At night, you can see a beautiful starry sky surrounded by mountains. I descended after sunset and the sky was just gorgeous at night.
Going up is easy, just follow the path, have snacks/food and 3-4 l of water as it is a long climb. You need to have good shoes, as it gets slippery on the way back, especially on the portions with small rocks.
You'll see goats on the way and little vegetation. As most of the hikes here in UAE, it is dry and dusty, but it is worth the experience. Still thinking if I should do it again to camp.
Please take your trash with you, as I have seen plastic bottles left on the mountain and I collected them when descending. Keep nature clean."

"The temperature was higher when I arrived than I had planned (41 degrees instead of 33). Cannot recommend trying the hike with that level of heat. No amount of water keeps your body temp down enough and it’s dangerous. Grateful that we barely got started before making the good choice to turn back. Can’t wait try again when temperatures are survivable. It was spectacular. Really beyond my imagination."

"The right wing of this hike is not a dangerous one. But if you are a beginner you may find it very hard as it is a long trail. Make sure that you have good hiking shoes 👟 and sufficient water - at least 2-3 litters of water."

Choosing Your Path: Right Bank vs. Left Bank
The Left Bank trail, on the other hand, is significantly steeper and more treacherous. It reaches the 'Village' in about a kilometer less than the Right Bank but requires advanced climbing skills and is not recommended for beginners or even intermediate hikers. This path is for seasoned adventurers seeking a serious challenge. Both routes offer incredible natural beauty, but the choice depends heavily on your experience and comfort level with challenging terrain.
Regardless of the path chosen, proper preparation is key. The terrain involves rocks, stone walkways, and significant elevation gain. Many hikers opt for the Right Bank for its scenic rewards and manageable challenge, while the Left Bank remains a formidable test for the truly experienced. Always prioritize safety and know your limits before embarking on either trail.
The Thrill and the Danger: Safety on the Trail
To mitigate risks, always hike with a group, inform someone of your plans, and carry ample water and high-energy snacks. Ensure your footwear has excellent grip, and consider using hiking poles for added stability. The UAE's extreme temperatures are another significant factor; hiking during the hottest parts of the day or year can be life-threatening. Stick to the cooler months and start your hike early in the morning to avoid heatstroke and exhaustion.
Remember that the 'Stairway to Heaven' is a demanding trek. It's not a casual stroll. By understanding the challenges, preparing adequately, and respecting the environment, you can significantly enhance your safety and enjoyment of this spectacular natural wonder. The breathtaking views are worth the effort, but only when approached with respect and preparedness.
Beyond the Hike: Camping and Stargazing
Setting up camp allows you to fully appreciate the tranquility of the mountains and witness the transition from day to night. Imagine watching the sunset paint the sky with vibrant colors, followed by the emergence of countless stars. This serene environment is perfect for reflection and connecting with nature. Remember to pack all necessary camping gear, including a tent, sleeping bag, and provisions for your stay.
When planning your camping trip, consider the weather conditions. While cooler months are ideal for hiking, they also mean colder nights. Ensure you have appropriate warm clothing. The experience of waking up to a mountain sunrise after a night under the stars is unforgettable and makes the challenging hike even more rewarding.
