Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Emirates National Auto Museum for its unique and vast collection of vintage, custom, and oversized vehicles, making it a must-visit for car enthusiasts. While the remote desert location and occasional warmth inside are noted drawbacks, the sheer spectacle of the exhibits, especially the giant Jeep and the rainbow cars, leaves a lasting impression. InstagramReddit

"My husband and I visited the museum early on a weekend morning, around 10 AM. We paid for both of us at the entrance (I don’t recall the exact amount), and since there were no other visitors at that time, we were able to park close to the museum building.

We visited in April, and it was already quite warm—so I highly recommend bringing a bottle of water with you. The museum itself is spacious, with a fascinating collection of unique and antique cars. Be prepared to walk a lot to explore everything!

Even in the morning, it felt a bit hot inside. I believe the air conditioning system is a bit outdated and doesn’t cool the space very well, which made the visit a bit uncomfortable at times.

That said, I really enjoyed the overall experience. While it might not be the kind of place you’d return to multiple times, it’s definitely worth a visit if you’re interested in automotive history or just want to see something different. I’d recommend it for car enthusiasts and curious minds alike."

"A must vist for all car enthusiasts and kids who love cars.. So well maintained and what an amazing collection 😍 .. It's away from the city and not very crowded and you can take your time. Entrance fee of AED 55 but I believe it was well worth it."

"A museum that must have been more impressive in its hey days, now left to age with its expensive collection within. The mega sized vehicles (only hobby possible for the Royal family to realise) are really impressive (and they are working vehicles!). Worth stopping by, perhaps in the non summer months as the Aircon is just not keeping up with times and it's really warm inside when the heat is 40-50 outside."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Vision of the Rainbow Sheikh

The Emirates National Auto Museum is a testament to the passion of Sheikh Hamad bin Hamdan Al Nahyan, famously known as the 'Rainbow Sheikh'. His extensive collection reflects a deep love for automobiles and a desire to preserve unique and record-breaking vehicles. Instagram The museum houses over 200 cars, trucks, and military vehicles, many of which are custom-built or have significant historical value. Instagram

Sheikh Hamad's collection is renowned for its diversity, ranging from classic Mercedes-Benz models, famously painted in rainbow colors, to the gargantuan Dodge truck and the colossal Jeep. This personal collection, displayed in a striking pyramid-shaped building in the desert, offers a rare glimpse into the eccentric and grand automotive tastes of a prominent Emirati figure. Instagram Visitors often remark on the sheer scale and uniqueness of the vehicles, making it a memorable experience for any car enthusiast. Reddit

Navigating the Desert Location

The Emirates National Auto Museum's remote desert location is part of its unique appeal, but it also requires careful planning for visitors. Situated a considerable drive from Abu Dhabi city, it's not a place you can easily pop into. Reddit Many travelers find it most convenient to visit the museum as part of a larger road trip, perhaps on the way to or from other destinations, rather than making it a standalone trip. Reddit

When planning your journey, ensure you have a reliable mode of transport, preferably a car or a pre-booked taxi. The drive itself can be quite an experience, with some roads offering the chance to drive at higher speeds. Reddit It's also crucial to consider the time of day and the season. Visiting during the cooler months (October to April) is highly recommended to avoid the intense desert heat, which can make exploring the spacious, and sometimes not fully air-conditioned, museum uncomfortable. Reddit

Experiencing the Collection

The Emirates National Auto Museum is a treasure trove for anyone with an interest in automobiles, from vintage classics to the extraordinarily large. The sheer variety is astounding, with everything from compact, quirky vehicles like the Daihatsu Midget to the imposing presence of military trucks and the iconic retired Boeing 747. InstagramReddit The museum's star attractions are undoubtedly the oversized vehicles: the 20-foot-tall Jeep and the world's largest truck, which never fail to impress visitors with their sheer scale. InstagramReddit

Beyond the giants, the collection features a remarkable array of vintage cars, including many Mercedes-Benz models that are famously painted in vibrant rainbow colors, reflecting the Sheikh's nickname. Instagram These unique, often custom-made vehicles offer a fascinating insight into automotive history and personal expression. While the museum is well-maintained, some visitors note that the air conditioning can be a challenge during peak heat, so planning your visit during cooler times or seasons is advisable for a more comfortable experience.
