But the nearly complete desecration of the building is a tragic reminder of the Soviet years when religion was deconstructed piece by piece. It’s back in the hands of the Jewish community, and will take millions of $$$ to restore. It won’t happen in my lifetime but we can pray for it’s future glory."

"A place with an incredible history. Built at the end of the 16th century, a few years after Shargorod was granted Magdeburg rights. It played a huge role in the life of the city, which at the beginning of the 20th century was 70% populated by Jews. During the Turkish occupation in the 17th century, it was converted into a mosque. After World War II, the Holocaust, and the mass emigration of Jews, the Soviet authorities used the synagogue premises as a warehouse for a juice factory. It is now owned by the city's Jewish community, but reconstruction has not yet been completed. The synagogue can be reached from a side street, if you go down a little lower and turn right. I hope that one day this monument, as well as others, of which there are many in Shargorod, will be restored, and this city will become a tourist destination."
