What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors acknowledge the Vorontsov Palace's historical significance and beautiful architecture, but its current state of reconstruction limits access and enjoyment. Many express a strong desire for its full restoration to become a prominent museum and tourist attraction.
"For now it is behind a construction fence. I would like to see it restored, as a pearl and decoration of the whole city. Although it is not in the best shape, its outlines and shape speak of nobility and noble origin."
Valerii Zhukov
"Beautiful architecture!
Vorontsov family estate. The dacha in Alupka has the status of a world-class museum... Unfortunately, we in Odessa cannot boast of such a status, but we really want this building to become a museum in the future and attract tourists and history buffs...
Currently under reconstruction.... We are waiting..."

"Everyone knows that Odesa is a pearl by the sea. The main decoration of every city is its architecture: theaters, museums, temples, palaces, etc. Let's consider the Vorontsov Palace. While walking along Primorsky Boulevard, be sure to visit it, you will not regret it. The place for the construction of the palace was not chosen by chance. In ancient times, the ancient Greek polis of Borisfen (mid-6th to early 5th centuries BC) was located here, later the Turkish fortress of En-Dunya (according to other sources, Hadzhibey), later the country house of the landowner Kulikovsky. The new residence of the Novorossiysk Governor-General M. Vorontsov was supposed to impress with its luxury, forms and beauty. A two-story palace in the Empire and Classicism styles was built according to the design of the Italian architect F. Boffo. Since 1826, it has been the official residence of the Governor-General, the imperial couple stayed here. In the period from 1826 to 1829 auxiliary buildings were built: stables, utility rooms, belvedere, outbuilding, fountain. Massive stone columns, stucco molding, 8 fireplaces made of Ural marble, English furniture, little has survived to our time. Many elements of decor (interior) were taken to the Alupka Palace of the Count in Crimea. The Vorontsov Palace is a vivid example of an irresponsible attitude to historical heritage. I give two stars for the restored belvedere, the facade of the palace, everything else needs to be worked on."

A Glimpse into History
Tragically, much of the palace's original interior decor, including fireplaces made of Ural marble and English furniture, has been lost over time. Many elements were reportedly transferred to the Alupka Palace in Crimea, leading to a sentiment among locals that Odessa has not adequately preserved its heritage. This has fueled a strong desire for the palace to be restored and recognized as a world-class museum, attracting tourists and history enthusiasts alike. The current state of reconstruction, while necessary, highlights the ongoing efforts to reclaim and preserve this architectural gem.
Despite its current condition, the palace's noble outlines and architectural style continue to evoke a sense of its past grandeur. The restored belvedere and the iconic archway offer visitors a tangible connection to its history. The palace's location on Primorsky Boulevard further enhances its appeal, making it a focal point for those exploring Odessa's scenic waterfront.
The Reconstruction Journey
During reconstruction, the palace is typically surrounded by construction fences, limiting direct access to the interior. Visitors can usually admire the exterior architecture, including the facade and the notable archway, from designated viewing areas. The restored belvedere is often visible and serves as a testament to the quality of work being undertaken. It's advisable for potential visitors to check local news or official city announcements for the most up-to-date information regarding access and the progress of the renovations.
The hope is that once reconstruction is complete, the Vorontsov Palace will be revitalized as a museum or cultural center, once again becoming a prominent attraction for both locals and tourists. This restoration effort is seen as crucial for enhancing Odessa's architectural heritage and its appeal as a tourist destination.
