Reviews Summary

Salute Hotel is celebrated for its unique Soviet modernist architecture, particularly its iconic spiral ramp, and its excellent location near Kyiv's major historical sites. While guests appreciate the helpful staff and accessibility features, some find the hotel's amenities dated and the breakfast service slow. Noise from traffic can also be a concern for some rooms.

"Special and interesting architecture - don't miss to use the ramp (not stairs!) instead of the elevator. Breakfast only from 0800...and serving takes a while. Reception hall is a bit dark. Rooms are OK and clean.
Reception staff very helpful and exceptionally friendly.
Located close (within walking distance) to the famous Pechersk Lavra (a Kiev must see!), park of eternal glory and the motherland monument."

"I stayed here for one night to experience this local landmark. It's a truly impressive building.

As a hotel it was very dated and could do with a refurb, however the room was clean and tidy. The staff were helpful too. The location is perfect for visiting Pechersk Lavra, the Holodmor Genocide museum and the Great Patriotic war museum. You also have Arsenalna metro stop a short walk away, and the fantastic Kyiv Food Market.

My room on the 6th floor facing the Dnieper river offered good views, especially from the balcony, though it wasn't particularly warm. The heated aircon did a job but there was a slight chill when not in bed - I was visiting in January (the coldest month in the Ukraine I believe).

I'd recommend visiting the hotel but just beware that it isn't particularly modern. As a side note, for anyone with access needs, poor mobility or using a wheelchair, the hotel has two lifts and because of the way the floors are designed, it's easy to get between floors. The floors are mostly connected by a spiral ramp."

"Alas the maintenance is missing and due to the traffic rooms are noisy. Breakfast poorly prepared. The atmosphere is soviet in the worst sense despite efforts of the staff which is kind and helpful. Anyhow is in the downtown, very comfortable with public transports it is clean. I suggest to chose superior rooms whether available."

The Architectural Significance of Salute Hotel

Salute Hotel is a prime example of Soviet modernist architecture, built in the 1980s. Its design is characterized by bold geometric shapes, concrete elements, and a functionalist approach. The most striking feature is the iconic spiral ramp that winds its way through the building, serving as both an architectural statement and an accessible pathway between floors. This design choice was innovative for its time, prioritizing functionality and a unique aesthetic over traditional hotel layouts. The hotel's Brutalist influences are evident in its imposing structure and raw concrete surfaces, making it a significant landmark for architecture enthusiasts. Reddit

Visiting Salute Hotel is an experience in appreciating a specific historical and architectural period. While the hotel itself may feel dated in terms of amenities, its design integrity remains intact. The lobby, with its spaciousness and characteristic decor, transports visitors back in time. The building's unique form and its integration with the surrounding landscape are testaments to the architectural ambitions of its era. It's a place where the form truly follows function, albeit in a visually dramatic way. Reddit

For those interested in the history of Kyiv and its urban development, Salute Hotel offers a tangible connection to the Soviet past. It stands as a monument to a particular architectural style that is increasingly recognized for its artistic merit. The hotel's location also places it within a cluster of significant historical sites, making it a convenient starting point for exploring Kyiv's rich heritage. Reddit

Navigating Salute Hotel: Accessibility and Practicalities

Salute Hotel was designed with accessibility in mind, a notable feature for its era. The spiral ramp is not just an aesthetic element but a practical solution for moving between floors, making it significantly easier for individuals with mobility issues or those using wheelchairs compared to buildings relying solely on elevators. The hotel also features two functional elevators, further enhancing accessibility. This thoughtful design makes it a more inclusive space than many older buildings. Reddit

However, guests should be aware that while the architecture is impressive, the hotel's amenities and furnishings can be dated. Rooms are generally clean and functional, but may not offer the modern comforts expected in contemporary hotels. Heating can be inconsistent, and some rooms might be noisy due to their proximity to traffic. Opting for a superior room is often recommended by guests for a potentially improved experience. Reddit

Practical advice for visitors includes being patient with breakfast service, as it can be slow. The hotel's bar offers a relaxed atmosphere with billiards. For dining outside the hotel, the nearby Kyiv Food Market is an excellent and diverse option. Reddit
