What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise UWEC for its diverse animal collection, including lions, chimps, and elephants, and the opportunity to learn about conservation. The 'Zoo Keeper for a Day' program is a standout experience. While the atmosphere is generally positive and well-organized, some note that accessibility could be improved.
"Excellent Service and Guides, but Needs More Wildlife & Value for Money
I recently visited the Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (UWEC) and had a very mixed but overall positive experience.
The absolute highlight was the service provided. The staff were fantastic, and the young woman who led our tour and explained the animals was incredibly knowledgeable and skillful. Her expertise and enthusiasm truly elevated the visit.
However, when comparing the UWEC to similar centers in other countries, the quantity of animals is noticeably lower. While the quality of care seems high, I felt the collection was quite limited.
A major plus for me was the incredible opportunity to see the White Rhinos. That sighting alone brought me a lot of joy!
The entry fee is $15, and this is where I have a slight reservation. Given the limited number of animals, I question whether the overall experience provides enough value for that $15 charge. While the guiding service is excellent, the center itself needs to be better formalized and organized to fully justify the price and live up to its potential as a national conservation center.
It's a wonderful place with great people, but a stronger institutional structure and a more diverse animal collection would make it an undeniable 5-star destination."

"The zoo is a place I had childhood memories with, over 20 years later, the zoo is a different place in 2025. The animals, the cleanness of the area, the hospitality of the staff & the quietness of the place is what really makes it amazing.
Truly a place like no other."

"The center emphasizes its role as a sanctuary for rescued animals and a place for education, which aligns with many visitor experiences.
I commend them on the educational value, especially for children, with knowledgeable guides providing facts about the animals and conservation efforts.
I must note the need for more maintenance around the grounds."
