What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Yildirim Mosque for its profound spiritual atmosphere and its status as Balıkesir's oldest Ottoman building. The unique architecture, featuring spolia columns and reused materials, is a significant draw. Some note the lack of explicit construction records, but the historical and religious significance is widely appreciated.
"Located in Yıldırım Mahallesi, the Mosque is the oldest Ottoman building in Balıkesir. There is no construction book. However, it is understood from various sources and its charter that it was built by Yıldırım Beyazıt in 1388. It is a social complex with a madrasah and a soup kitchen in a very large courtyard. It was repaired in 1818 and after the earthquake of 1897. The interior of the mosque has a rectangular plan and is divided into three naves by two rows of five columns each. The capitals of these spolia columns, which were placed without a pedestal, are also of spolia material. Six of them are in the Byzantine style, three of them are in the Ottoman style, and one is in the form of an old pedestal. Reused architectural pieces taken from the surrounding ruins were used in the mosque. Its walls are made of cut stone with wide joints. There is only one row of bricks on the western wall. Although there are traces of the first structure on the outer surfaces, it carries the characteristics of the Late period with its general appearance"
