What Travellers Say

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Sultanahmet's unparalleled location for exploring Istanbul's historical heart, with many highlighting the exceptional service and spacious accommodations, particularly at luxury properties. While the grandeur of the architecture and the overall experience are highly rated, some guests note that breakfast service and cafe quality can occasionally fall short of the otherwise impeccable standards.

"Booked a suite for my family via AMEX FHR, stayed 4 nights. Everything is 10/10 except the breakfast and cafe. They included the essentials for our infant (shower kit etc), which is certainly not expected but very kind of them.

Service overall is truly amazing, however they fall short in breakfast and cafe.

While every item of the breakfast is great, the service falls short. Every day there would be something - for the first day they only brought in 1 cup of water, where there was 5 of us as. Then, on our last day, you have to flag down a waiter even though there was usually 2-3 tables apart from us during the stay. Furthermore, the cafe is a hit or miss. One time, a guy made the coffee, and it was great. The other time, a lady made a coffee, and when I asked for it to be even shorter, she just re-ran the same puck (without grinding a new one) which is something I've yet to seen anywhere. Just seems like the team that deals with food/cafe is less eager to service than the rest.

Overall, we had originally planned on extending our stay, and this made us sway away from extending as we felt that the food & cafe service was deteriorating more and more each day."

Emil Hajric

"We had an exceptional stay at this hotel. The location cannot be beat for exploring this vibrant city. The hotel grounds are beautiful and our allocated room was very spacious and well appointed. The service level was top notch and what we expect of a Four Seasons property. The breakfast as well as our other dining experiences here was excellent. We would not hesitate to recommend this property to any of our friends or family."

Patrick Tran

"There are 5 star hotels, There are luxury hotels and top of these, there is another category which this hotel belongs to that only few can make into. When you come to stay here, other hotels just feel mediocre. No wonder why they got so many awards.. Four Seasons already known for the luxury hospitality but I think this one raise the bar even for FS standards. This place has by far most sophisticated and luxurious breakfast I ever seen in any hotel in the World. I hate when breakfast buffet in hotels seems to have unlimited options with big setups but can’t really find what you want. Here everything is freshly prepared in small quantities placed in a unpretentious buffet and you order other items from menu and it’s cooked up to your taste. Everything designed around quality. Nothing here done for sake of checking the box. Atmosphere is also amazing and everything feels just right. If you want to see and experience what a real luxury hotel is.. This is the right place to stay in Istanbul. I will go even beyond to say that this is a hotel one can travel to Istanbul just to stay here."

The Sultanahmet Square Experience

Sultanahmet Square is the beating heart of Istanbul's historic peninsula, a UNESCO World Heritage site that pulsates with centuries of history. It's not just a place to see landmarks; it's an experience. Imagine standing between the majestic Hagia Sophia and the elegant Blue Mosque, feeling the weight of empires that once stood here. The square itself is a vibrant hub, often filled with street performers, local vendors, and fellow travelers from around the globe. TikTok+1

During the day, the square is bustling with activity. You'll see people admiring the architecture, taking photos, and soaking in the atmosphere. As dusk settles, the square transforms. The illuminated mosques create a truly magical ambiance, perfect for a leisurely evening stroll. Many visitors enjoy grabbing a traditional Turkish tea or coffee from a nearby cafe and simply watching the world go by. The energy here is palpable, a constant reminder of Istanbul's enduring allure. TikTok+1

For an unforgettable perspective, consider visiting the rooftop terraces of some restaurants overlooking the square. Places like Seven Hills Restaurant offer breathtaking panoramic views of both Hagia Sophia and the Bosphorus, especially stunning at sunset. While some terraces are free to access for the view, others may require a purchase. It's a fantastic way to capture iconic photos and appreciate the grandeur of Sultanahmet from above. TikTok

Navigating the Historical Gems: Hagia Sophia & Blue Mosque

Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque are the crown jewels of Sultanahmet, each with a unique and profound history. Hagia Sophia, originally a Byzantine cathedral, later converted into an Ottoman mosque, and now a mosque again, showcases a stunning blend of Christian and Islamic art and architecture. Its massive dome and intricate mosaics are awe-inspiring. TikTok

The Blue Mosque, officially known as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, is renowned for its six minarets and the thousands of exquisite blue Iznik tiles that adorn its interior, giving it its popular name. It's an active mosque, so visitors must adhere to dress codes and be mindful of prayer times. The sheer scale and beauty of both structures are a testament to the architectural prowess of their eras. TikTok+2

When visiting, remember that these are sacred sites. Dress modestly: women should cover their heads, shoulders, and knees, and men should wear long trousers. It's advisable to visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the largest crowds and experience a more serene atmosphere. Photography is usually permitted, but always be respectful and avoid using flash. TikTok+1

Culinary Delights in and around Sultanahmet

While Sultanahmet is a prime tourist destination, its culinary scene can be a mixed bag. Many restaurants directly on the main square cater heavily to tourists, which can sometimes mean higher prices and less authentic flavors. However, this doesn't mean you can't find delicious food. For a more local and potentially budget-friendly experience, venture a few streets away from the main attractions. TikTokReddit

Consider trying places like Baran 2 Restaurant, which is noted for its variety and friendly service, though it comes with a higher price tag. For an unforgettable view with your meal, Seven Hills Restaurant offers a spectacular terrace overlooking Hagia Sophia and the Bosphorus – a perfect spot for a memorable dinner or lunch. TikTok+1 Don't shy away from street food either; simit (sesame bread rings) and döner kebabs are popular and tasty options. TikTok

Beyond the immediate vicinity, exploring areas like Eminönü or Karaköy can lead you to more traditional eateries and a wider array of local dishes. From savory kebabs and flavorful mezes to sweet baklava and rich Turkish coffee, Sultanahmet and its surroundings offer a true taste of Turkish cuisine. TikTok
