What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Mihrimah Sultan Hamamı for its authentic atmosphere, excellent service, and significantly lower prices compared to tourist-oriented establishments. While communication can be a challenge due to limited English, the traditional bathing experience, including the sauna, scrub, and massage, is highly satisfying. Some guests have noted inconsistent pricing, so confirming costs upfront is advised.
"Excellent service, clean facilities and ripping hot sauna. No one speaks any English, but not much is needed if you've been to any kind of public bath before. Also costs less than a quarter of what you'd pay for similar service closer to the Hagia Sophia (~$20 for entry, scrub and massage)"

"Excellent experience! Very authentic and excellent service. The place was beautiful, there was basically no one when I went (on a Wednesday at noon) and I could use the sauna by myself. I received a scrub and a massage and was very satisfied.
I recommend bringing a swimsuit and whatever products (I used hair products) you desire. They’ll give you everything else.
The hamam has two parts, and two entrances, one for men and around the corner, one for women.
The price was very good, especially compared to the other ham and that the tourists offices and hotels promoted (100€ for one hour? I paid 25)."
Mariana Hernández
"Based on the other reviews, there seems to be inconsistent pricing given to customers. Their price list inside also lists low prices compared to what I had to pay (1,000 TL) for just a massage (no hamam). It’s disappointing that they’re taking advantage of foreigners."

The History and Significance of Mihrimah Sultan Hamamı
The hamam's construction reflects the grandeur of the Ottoman era, intended to serve the community and provide a luxurious bathing experience. Its location in the bustling Üsküdar district, on the Asian side of Istanbul, further cements its historical importance. Visiting the hamam offers a tangible connection to the past, allowing you to experience a tradition that has been cherished for centuries.
While the hamam is named after Mihrimah Sultan, it's important to distinguish it from the Mihrimah Sultan Mosque, also designed by Mimar Sinan and located nearby. Both structures are testaments to the architectural prowess of the period and the influence of Mihrimah Sultan herself.
Experiencing an Authentic Turkish Bath
The typical hamam ritual begins with a session in the hot steam room or sauna to open up the pores. This is followed by a vigorous scrub (kese) performed by an attendant, which exfoliates the skin, leaving it feeling incredibly smooth. After the scrub, you'll be lathered with rich foam and washed thoroughly.
Many visitors also opt for a massage after the scrub and wash, which can be quite firm and deeply relaxing, especially for those with sore muscles. The entire process is designed to be cleansing and rejuvenating, leaving you feeling refreshed and revitalized. Remember that communication might be a bit challenging due to language barriers, but the staff are generally helpful and the process is quite intuitive.
Navigating Pricing and Services
However, it's crucial to be aware that pricing can sometimes be inconsistent, particularly for foreign visitors. Some reviews mention being charged higher prices than advertised or expected, especially for massages. Therefore, it's highly recommended to confirm the exact cost of all services you intend to use before you begin your experience.
While the basic entry fee covers access to the bathing areas and sauna, the scrub and massage are often additional. Bringing your own toiletries, like hair products, can be a good idea, though the hamam provides the essentials.
