What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors are intrigued by KüçüK Kilise's historical significance and architecture, but many are disappointed by its frequent closure. When accessible, it's appreciated as a culture and art house, though the faded frescoes are a poignant reminder of its past glory.
"It’s the tiny church. It was closed so couldn’t get in."

"This place must be opened."
Kadir Şahbaz
"It is an old chapel (small church) within the inner castle of Amasra. Built in the 9th century using a meticulous brick-and-stone masonry system, the chapel features special patterns on the windowsills and measures 11 x 7 meters. The Ambon Vault depicts the "Ascension of Jesus Christ." The Narthex and other sections of Ambon are also adorned with colorful, religious-themed murals (frescoes). However, the frescoes have suffered damage over time. The apse is semicircular both inside and out. The chapel, converted into a small mosque in the 15th century, was closed to worship in 1930. It was restored by the Amasra Museum in 2002 and opened as a "Culture and Art House.""

Architectural Significance
The interior once boasted vibrant, religious-themed murals (frescoes), though time has taken its toll, leaving only traces visible today. These frescoes, along with the Ambon Vault depicting the 'Ascension of Jesus Christ,' highlight the chapel's artistic and spiritual importance. The building's transformation over centuries, from a chapel to a mosque in the 15th century and now a 'Culture and Art House,' adds layers to its historical narrative. Visitors often express a desire to see these interior details more clearly, but access can be a challenge.
Restoration and Current Use
Despite restoration efforts, visitor accounts frequently mention the chapel being closed to entry. This inconsistency in accessibility can be frustrating for tourists hoping to experience the interior. When open, it often features displays such as model ships or local art, reflecting its current role. Travelers keen on experiencing the interior should try to confirm its operational status locally before making a dedicated trip.
