It was reportedly collected sometime during the reign of Sultan Süleyman I The Magnificient, brought to Istanbul, and installed by Mimar Sinan. No one is sure why this exact mosque holds these fragments, but they are here nonetheless. They are placed pretty high ...

Reviews Summary

Iskender Pasha Mosque is praised for its beautiful Mimar Sinan architecture and peaceful garden, offering a serene escape. However, some visitors note that the surrounding area is in need of better maintenance, detracting slightly from the overall experience.

"Need more attention from government, the mosque is monumental, the condition is not in a good shape, surrounded by crowded residential"

Felix Siauw

"İskender Pasha Mosque is located in the neighborhood of its own name in the Sur district of Diyarbakır. It was built by the Governor of the city, İskender Pasha, between 1551 and 1554. İskender Pasha Mosque is mentioned as a work of Mimar Sinan in Tuhfetül Mi'marin, where the works of Mimar Sinan are compiled. It looks very beautiful like other Mimar Sinan works in Diyarbakır. Although the building appears to be a single-domed structure at first glance, it has additional spaces on the sides and a peaceful garden. Passing through a small arched door between the streets, I found myself in its garden, a very beautiful mosque with cats in its quiet and peaceful garden. I recommend you visit."

"A mosque in Sur, Diyarbakır, built around 1550 during the reign of Süleyman the Magnificent and restored in 1850.

It was commissioned by İskender Pasha, then the Anatolian Treasurer, later the Governor of Van, and later the Governor of Diyarbakır. He is buried not in the cemetery in the mosque garden, but in the İskenderpaşa Social Complex in Istanbul.

Unfortunately, the roads leading to the mosque and the surrounding area are derelict.

The location is correct.
A restroom and ablution area are available.

Thanks to all who contributed."

The Legacy of Mimar Sinan

Iskender Pasha Mosque is a testament to the architectural genius of Mimar Sinan, the chief Ottoman architect and civil engineer. He is considered one of the greatest architects of all time and designed over 300 major buildings and smaller projects. His works are characterized by their harmonious proportions, innovative structural solutions, and aesthetic beauty. The Iskender Pasha Mosque, built between 1551 and 1554, showcases his signature style with its elegant dome, well-proportioned minaret, and thoughtful layout. Reddit

Sinan's mosques often feature a central dome supported by semi-domes or pendentives, creating a sense of spaciousness and grandeur. The use of fine stonework, intricate tilework, and detailed calligraphy further enhances the aesthetic appeal of his creations. Visiting Iskender Pasha Mosque offers a chance to appreciate the enduring legacy of this master architect and understand his profound impact on Ottoman architecture. Reddit

Many sources highlight the mosque as a prime example of Sinan's work in Diyarbakır, even though this specific mosque is in Istanbul. This indicates the widespread influence and consistent quality of his designs across the Ottoman Empire. Reddit

Architectural Features and Details

The Iskender Pasha Mosque is a single-domed, square-planned structure, a common and effective design for Ottoman mosques. However, it features additional spaces on the sides, adding to its unique character. The narthex, or entrance area, protrudes outward and contains five chambers, offering a more elaborate approach than simpler designs. Reddit

A notable feature is the cylindrical, single-balcony stone minaret added to the left side of the mosque. It's described as being kept quite plain, which can serve to emphasize the beauty of the main prayer hall. Inside, the mosque draws attention with its calligraphy examples and calligrapher signatures on the pulpit and walls, adding a layer of artistic and historical significance. Reddit

To the east of the mosque lies the tomb belonging to Iskender Pasha's family. This tomb is particularly noteworthy as it's described as the only example in Diyarbakır with its central dome and two half-domes plan scheme, further showcasing the architectural diversity and innovation present in the region. Reddit

Historical Context and Significance

Commissioned by Iskender Pasha, who served as the Governor of Diyarbakır and held other significant positions within the Ottoman administration, the mosque was built between 1551 and 1554 during the reign of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. Reddit This period was a golden age for the Ottoman Empire, marked by significant architectural and cultural achievements, with Mimar Sinan at the forefront of artistic development. Reddit

While the mosque is a significant work, some reviews mention that the surrounding area and roads leading to it are in a derelict condition, suggesting a need for more attention from local authorities to preserve the historical context. Reddit Despite this, the mosque itself is recognized for its beauty and architectural merit, attracting local and foreign researchers interested in Ottoman history and architecture. Reddit

Interestingly, Iskender Pasha himself is buried not in the mosque's garden cemetery but in the Iskenderpaşa Social Complex in Istanbul, highlighting his extensive influence and contributions across different regions of the empire. Reddit
