"It was a very cute place. The wife of Bayezid II, Bülbül Hatun, had it built; it is obvious that it was touched by a lady's hand."

"Newer than most, but older than most in the world"

"Beautiful from the outside, only white plaster is visible from the inside.

Located in the Hatuniye neighborhood, on the banks of the Yeşilırmak River, the mosque was commissioned in 1510 by Bülbül Hatun, wife of Sultan Bayezid II and mother of Prince Ahmet. Originally a complex comprising a mosque, a bathhouse, and a primary school. The mosque is entered through a low arched doorway on the north side. The north facade is capped by a five-bay narthex formed by six columns connected by pointed brick arches. The walls of this section are higher than those of the main prayer hall. The arches are adorned with a Meander motif, encompassing the entire facade. The narthex is covered with five small domes. Only the central dome rests on an octagonal drum; the others are free.

The rectangular mosque's walls are built of rubble stone. Two piers in the central section of the prayer hall are connected to the walls, dividing the interior into six sections. The two central sections, wider and higher than the side sections, are covered with two domes. A single-balcony brick minaret stands in the northwest corner of the mosque. The Subyan School is located just east of the mosque. Its pointed-arched, stone-framed entrance is on Hazeranlar Street, the same street as the mosque's entrance. The rubble walls are lined with three rows of brickwork horizontally. The entrance facade features three pointed-arched windows. Geometric ornamentation is created by arranging the bricks in various patterns above the arches. On the west facade, there is a low-arched doorway opening into the interior and two windows near the top of the wall. The interior of the single-story building was constructed as a single, large room. The roof was originally covered with a double dome. However, the domes were later demolished, and the building was covered with a wooden roof. The floors and ceiling are wooden."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Architectural Marvels of Hatuniye Complex

The Hatuniye Complex, a significant Ottoman-era site in Amasya, showcases a blend of historical architectural styles. Commissioned in 1510 by Bülbül Hatun, the complex originally comprised a mosque, a bathhouse, and a primary school (Subyan School). The mosque itself is a rectangular structure built of rubble stone, notable for its interior division into six sections by two central piers. This arrangement supports two domes over the wider, higher central sections, creating a unique spatial experience. Reddit

The exterior of the mosque is equally distinctive. A prominent feature is the six-column narthex on the north side, connected by pointed brick arches and adorned with a Meander motif. This creates an impressive facade that is higher than the main prayer hall. The mosque is crowned by a single-balcony brick minaret, a classic element of Ottoman mosque architecture. The Subyan School, located to the east, exhibits its own charm with pointed-arched, stone-framed windows and intricate geometric ornamentation formed by brick patterns. Reddit

While the original domes of the Subyan School were later replaced with a wooden roof, the building retains its historical character. The overall impression of the Hatuniye Complex is one of historical depth and thoughtful design, reflecting the era's commitment to both religious and educational infrastructure. Visitors often remark on the delicate touch evident in its construction, suggesting a feminine influence in its patronage. Reddit

A Glimpse into Ottoman Education

The Subyan School within the Hatuniye Complex offers a tangible connection to Ottoman educational practices. These schools, known as sıbyan mektepleri, were the primary level of education in the Ottoman Empire, typically catering to young children. They focused on basic literacy, religious instruction, and moral upbringing. The architecture of the Subyan School, with its accessible entrance and well-lit interior, suggests a functional and welcoming space for learning. Reddit

The school's construction, featuring rubble walls lined with horizontal brickwork and adorned with geometric patterns, speaks to the craftsmanship of the period. The pointed-arched windows would have provided ample natural light for lessons. Although the original double dome roof has been replaced, the building's layout as a single, large room indicates a communal learning environment. Visiting the Subyan School provides insight into the importance placed on early education within Ottoman society and the role such complexes played in community life. Reddit
