"Best hammam in Istanbul!! Value for money, we were a group of three and payed 15€ each for hammam, sauna, massage body and head. They ladies were just amazing, treated us like princesses, special mention to Ursa, Demet and Emine! If only we were staying a bit longer in Istanbul. ❤️"

"An historical institution that has seen much better days. Smells of mildew and damp, which are visible on the walls covered in green. Can't really complain because of the price. The hammam itself was cheap and cheerful. Tipping wise, I was willing to tip the main guy who did my ritual and the guy who showed me in, dealt with my shoes, and dried me off to sit on the sofa. However, there was a young guy who appeared much later looking like he just woke up from a nap who asked for a tip even though he did not provide me any service. That was a bit of a downer."

"This experience was the best for me in Istanbul. Only come here if you like a local traditional experience in a 400 year old Hamam. (Don't expect the expensive resort treatment) Entrance was 400tl, scrubbing and washing 150tl, and massage also 150Tl. Opening and closing with a sauna. The experience was amazing I felt reborn. I will certainly do this again tomorrow and my wife too."

The Hamam Experience: What to Expect
Many reviewers highlight the incredible value for money at this hamam. For a fraction of the price of more tourist-oriented spas, you receive a comprehensive treatment that includes access to the sauna, steam rooms, and the main bathing areas. While the building shows its age, with some noting signs of dampness, this is often seen as part of its charm and historical character. The staff, though sometimes with limited English, are generally attentive and aim to provide a good service.
It's important to manage expectations: this is a local's hamam. You won't find plush robes or ambient spa music. Instead, you'll find a functional, historical space where the focus is on the traditional bathing ritual. The communal aspect, even with separate male and female sections, is part of its appeal for those seeking a genuine cultural immersion.
Navigating Tipping and Service
Some guests have noted instances where an attendant who provided minimal service also expected a tip, which can be a bit of a downer. The advice from seasoned visitors is to tip based on the service received. Having cash readily available is crucial, as tipping is typically done in person.
Communication can sometimes be a barrier, as not all staff may speak fluent English. However, most visitors find that gestures and a positive attitude go a long way. The key is to be clear about the services you've received and to tip accordingly for a smooth and positive interaction.
Historical Significance and Atmosphere
The atmosphere is often described as authentic and charming, despite the visible signs of age. The architecture, with its high ceilings, marble surfaces, and warm lighting, contributes to a sense of timelessness. While some might find the building a bit dated or notice the humidity, many visitors appreciate this raw, unadulterated historical feel. It's a stark contrast to the polished, modern spas that cater primarily to tourists.
For those seeking an experience that connects them to the past and offers a genuine cultural insight, Büyük Hamam Kasımpaşa is an excellent choice. It provides a tangible link to Istanbul's heritage, making the visit not just about relaxation but also about historical appreciation.
