The Amphitheatre of El Jem bears outstanding witness to Roman architecture, notably monuments built for spectator events, in Africa. Located in a plain in the centre of Tunisia, this amphitheatre is built entirely of stone blocks, with no foundations and free-standing. In this respect it is modelled on the Coliseum of Rome without being an exact copy of the Flavian construction. Its size (big axi...

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the El Jem Amphitheatre for its impressive preservation and scale, often comparing it favorably to the Colosseum in Rome due to fewer crowds. The ability to freely explore the arena, tunnels, and upper levels is a major highlight, offering a deeply immersive historical experience. Some reviewers suggest more signage would enhance visitor guidance.

"Impressive Amphitheater and very well preserved. Tickets are rather cheap and include entrance to a kind of nearby museum with excavated mosaics, can highly recommend both.

You can climb all the way up to the top of the coliseum and also underneath it.
Went there on a Thursday afternoon and it was not very crowded."

Kim Tang

"Incredible Roman coliseum in the middle of Tunisia, was worth the journey. The coliseum is made of a stone local to the area so it has a unique color. The site also has fewer tourists and you can have sections to yourself. It’s a nice day trip."

Irwin Mier

"Visiting the El Jem Amphitheater was one of the highlights of my trip to Tunisia.
It’s hard to believe this grand structure was built in the 3rd century AD — entirely out of stone, without modern tools or machinery. Once home to more than 30,000 spectators, it stands today as one of the largest and best-preserved Roman amphitheaters in the world, second only to the Colosseum in Rome.

Walking through the massive arches and underground passages, you can almost hear the echoes of history. The arena, the corridors, and the symmetry of the stones are incredibly well preserved — it truly feels like stepping back in time.

What surprised me most was how peaceful the place was. Unlike similar sites in Europe, it wasn’t crowded at all, which made the experience even more special. I could take my time exploring and taking photos without any rush.

If you visit, go during the morning or late afternoon for the best light and fewer people. Bring water if you’re coming in summer — it can get quite hot.

A must-see for anyone visiting Tunisia — both for history lovers and photographers.
