What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Reviews for the Big Buddha hiking trails are polarized, with many highlighting extreme difficulty and safety concerns due to steep, slippery terrain. While some appreciate the challenge and views, others found it dangerous and not worth the risk, especially without proper footwear. The Big Buddha itself is generally admired for its scale and peaceful ambiance.
"The hike itself was alright. At the end of May, the weather will not be favorable. When we reached halfway, the road was blocked maybe due to the weather. Steep incline but we were wearing sandals and it was still manageable."
Vishva Oralie
"A lovely and challenging hiking trail with a steep incline. Terrain is slippery even when it is dry, especially while walking downhill.
Bring water, closed shoes, and mosquito spray. It will get very hot."
Stefan Stefanov
"I don't recommend it. From the begin at the bottom there was a road. But a bit later you walk dangerously close to the edge until you have to climb a really steep path with no rope or anything and it's really slippery. You should never do this trail alone. And had a couple of moments where I slipped and almost fell down from pretty high. And you get eaten alive by mosquitos even if you use mosquitos spray. I turned around because it was too dangerous going up."

Navigating the Trails: Safety First
It's crucial to prioritize safety. Sturdy, closed-toe hiking shoes are non-negotiable. Avoid sandals or casual shoes, as they offer little grip and protection. Many visitors recommend bringing plenty of water, sunscreen, and mosquito repellent, as the environment can be hot and buggy. If you're not an experienced hiker or are uncomfortable with heights and steep climbs, consider alternative ways to reach the Big Buddha, such as the cable car or local transport.
Some trails, like the one from Kata Beach in Phuket, are noted as being 7.7 kilometers and rated as difficult, offering a chance to see wildlife. On Lantau Island, Hong Kong, routes can be long, with some taking over 4 hours to complete, including rest stops. Always research the specific trail you plan to take and be prepared for the conditions.
The Big Buddha Experience: More Than Just a Statue
Beyond the main statue, the surrounding areas offer additional points of interest. On Lantau Island, the Ngong Ping 360 cable car provides a spectacular aerial journey to the site, with panoramic views of the islands and sea. Nearby, the Wisdom Path offers a more contemplative experience, featuring giant wooden totems inscribed with ancient Buddhist scriptures, providing a serene escape. In Phuket, the hike to the Big Buddha can also lead to encounters with local wildlife, adding an element of adventure.
It's important to remember that these are religious sites. Visitors are expected to dress respectfully, covering their knees and shoulders. While the main Buddha statue is often free to access, associated attractions like the cable car will have separate fees. Planning your visit to coincide with less crowded times, like early mornings, can enhance the peaceful atmosphere.
Wildlife Encounters: Monkeys and More
Beyond monkeys, the hiking trails themselves can offer opportunities to see other forms of wildlife. The trail from Kata Beach in Phuket is noted for providing a chance to see wildlife. This adds another layer of adventure to the hiking experience, but also underscores the importance of being aware of your surroundings and respecting the natural habitat.
Mosquitos are also a common concern, especially on the trails. Even with repellent, they can be persistent. This highlights the need for adequate preparation, including wearing appropriate clothing and using insect repellent to make the experience more comfortable.
