Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Ratsadaphisek Bridge to be a charming and photogenic landmark, especially beautiful at sunset. The adjacent weekend market offers a lively atmosphere and local flavors, making it a popular spot for an evening stroll and souvenir hunting. While the bridge itself is historically significant, some find it less of a destination and more of a pleasant backdrop to the surrounding activities.
"After looking at the very photogenic bridge head down to the walkway by the river below and as you walk along you will see some great paintings and ceramic animals along the walls.
You can also find some great paintings on walls around the old town.
The Ratsadaphisek Bridge over the river Wang was originally constructed in 1894 to commemorate King Rama V's 25th anniversary on the throne, it was a wooden structure that served as a vital link between the city's newer areas and the historic Wiang Nuea district.
However, the force of nature proved challenging, and the original wooden bridge collapsed in 1901 due to heavy monsoon rains and floating logs. Undeterred, the people of Lampang rebuilt it with a stronger iron-wood structure in 1905. Yet, even this version succumbed to the power of the Wang River in 1915, collapsing under the weight of floating logs during another flood.
Recognizing the bridge's significance, the city authorities decided to construct a more durable and resilient structure. In 1917, the current reinforced concrete bridge was built, replacing the previous wooden iterations. Painted entirely in white, it has become an iconic landmark and a symbol of Lampang's resilience and enduring spirit.
The Ratsadaphisek Bridge has witnessed significant historical events, including World War II. Despite being a potential target for Allied bombings, the bridge survived due to its camouflage paint and the intervention of Lucy Starling, an American missionary teacher who convinced the Allies of its non-strategic importance.
Today, the Ratsadaphisek Bridge continues to serve as a vital link for the city, connecting its past and present. It stands as a testament to the ingenuity and perseverance of the people of Lampang, a reminder of their ability to overcome challenges and build a lasting legacy."

"Ratsadaphisek Bridge is a bridge across Wang River in the area of Tambon Hua Wiang, City of Lampang, Lampang Province, northern Thailand. It serves to connect outer and inner City of Lampang.
Originally, it was a wooden bridge that the ruler of Nakhon Lampang, Chao Noranan Chaichaowalit (เจ้านรนันทไชยชวลิต) together with Lampang people had built to commemorate King Chulalongkorn (Rama V)’s Anniversary of his 25th year Accession to the throne in 1894. The name "Ratsadaphisek" refers to 25th Anniversary Celebration or Silver Jubilee. However, there is another name that is commonly called "White Bridge" according to its characteristics. The bridge collapsed twice because of the large number of logs being washed downstream during the monsoon period and was rebuilt in reinforced concrete bridge in 1917.At any rate, it does not involve anything in Ratchadaphisek Road in Bangkok.
During World War II the bridge was painted in camouflaging colours so as to avoid being bombed by the Allies, who were also advised that the bridge had no strategic significance. After the war it was repainted in white. It has white rooster emblems and royal garudas decorated at the bridgehead.
Today, Ratsadaphisek Bridge is regarded as one of the landmarks of Lampang Province, as well as Wat Phra That Lampang Luang. At the end of the bridge in the inner city side is the location of a very busy local flea market especially at night of Saturday-Sunday called "Kat Kong Ta" (กาดกองต้า)."
