What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Phed Mark is celebrated for its intensely flavorful Pad Kra Pao, particularly the perfectly fried duck egg and the aromatic basil. While many find the recommended spice levels delicious, some find it less spicy than expected, while others caution even mild levels can be hot. The restaurant's focus on a single dish is seen as a strength by many, though a few found the flavors unremarkable.
"When you get there, you need to order first then wait outside for your number to be called. They let us know that it will be around 20 mins and this was around 12:30pm which wasn’t too bad.
So basically they only serve one type of dish, Pad Kra Pao. Which is just duck egg on top of rice and mince meat with chilli. I had the chicken with spicy level 3 (recommended) with 2 duck yolks. I like enjoy chilli and handle quite abit before it gets too spicy. I thought the level 3 was just beginning of the spicy level and wasn’t that hot that people are claiming it to be. But it might be the recommended option as the spice level doesn’t overpower the flavours. But if you love your spice, I recommend 4 or 5.
Overall, nothing special. Didn’t even end up finishing the dish. Flavours didn’t pop. Dish felt very dry and not that enjoyable to finish. Must be the hype."

"Had to find time to try Phed Mark’s while in Bangkok since I’ve been watching Mark Wiens for years now and want to try his Pad Kra Pao.
We had our dinner coming back from our Safari World. Luckily no lines so it took only 10 mins for our 10 orders.
Simple and small menu but it’s full/packed of deliciousness. Eight veg/meat/seafood options that includes rice and fried duck egg.
Enjoyed our Sour Pork (Spicy/Recommended) & Beef (Non-spicy) Phad Kra Pao. Meats were full of umami flavors and love the perfectly fried duck egg.
Highly recommended!"

"Phed Mark is exactly the kind of place you want to discover in Bangkok: a small spot with big flavor. The Pad Krapao was intense, full of aroma, and properly spicy, exactly how it should be. The crispy fried egg with the creamy yolk on top was the perfect finishing touch.
The plate was completely empty at the end. No surprise, the dish was simply too good.
The place itself is small and straightforward, but that’s part of its charm. The awards on the wall make it obvious why this spot is so popular: they focus on the food, and the food delivers.
If you’re looking for real, no-nonsense Pad Krapao in Bangkok, this is the place to go.
Not Spicy, Not Eating ! :)"

The Legend of Phed Mark: From Food Blogger to Restaurateur
The menu, while small, offers a variety of proteins and spice levels to cater to different preferences. The star of the show is the Pad Kra Pao itself, known for its aromatic basil, savory meat, and the signature crispy fried duck egg. The choice of spice level is crucial, with many recommending Level 3 as a starting point to truly appreciate the complex flavors without being overwhelmed by heat. For those seeking an extra kick, higher levels are available, promising a fiery experience.
Beyond the food, Phed Mark offers a glimpse into authentic Bangkok street food culture, albeit in a slightly more organized setting. The restaurant's popularity means it can get crowded, but the efficient service and the sheer deliciousness of the food make the wait worthwhile for many. It's a testament to Mark Wiens' passion for Thai cuisine and his ability to translate his global food knowledge into a beloved local eatery.
Mastering the Pad Kra Pao: Spice Levels and Egg Perfection
When it comes to spice, Phed Mark offers a spectrum. While many find Level 3 to be the sweet spot, offering a pleasant heat that enhances the dish's flavors without overpowering them, true spice lovers might venture to Level 4 or 5. It's a common piece of advice from reviewers to start conservatively if you're unsure, as even the 'mild' options can pack a surprising punch for the uninitiated. The goal is to find a level where the heat complements, rather than masks, the savory and aromatic notes of the basil and meat.
The duck egg is another critical component, often prepared to achieve a delightful crispiness on the edges while maintaining a rich, runny yolk. Many diners rave about adding extra duck eggs, describing them as 'perfectly jiggly' and 'crispy perfection.' This creamy yolk, when mixed with the rice and stir-fry, adds a luxurious depth to every bite, making the Pad Kra Pao an unforgettable experience.
