4-Hour Trek Recommended

Opt for the 4-hour option to see the stunning inner waterfall. Worth the extra time! :water_wave:

Day 7 we moved from Ban Rak Thai to Pai. On the way getting super lost on some dusty, steep, and curvey roads. Stopped at a cool little river side lunch spot. Experienced the most fun cave hike I've ever done walking through a river that runs under a mountain. Also saw a human powered ferris wheel on the side of the road. Another full day in the books🛵

Reviews Summary

Mae La Na Cave is lauded as an authentic and thrilling adventure, with visitors praising the stunning inner waterfall and unique cave ecosystem. The mandatory guide service is seen as essential for safety and navigation, though communication can be limited. The physically demanding nature and the need to get wet are part of the raw, unforgettable experience.

"Authentic adventure inside an epic cave.

Absolutely necessary with guide, even though I usually prefer to do excursions on my own, this is not the case.

I did the 4 hour hike to the inner waterfall, saw cockroaches, fish, little white dragons which name I don’t know, kind of transparent shrimp and spiders. Obviously also bats, either moving or static inside the bat cave.

Regarding the water shoes, even though there are available once you hire the guide, they only have small numbers up to 42 or so. I have a 47 so it was impossible to fit them. The guide fortunately had some slippers for me. You will get wet until your chest, depending on your height of course.

Do it when in this beautiful area!!"

"At the entrance, there is a stall that offers guide services for 300 THB per person. The guide takes you to three caves, and you will need to swim to the third cave using a bamboo raft. It is possible to feed fish along the way. The experience is worth the price. (Not possible to go without guide)"

"There are 3 caves to explore- Coral cave , Diamond cave and Mae La Na cave. Mae La Na cave is a water cave and the water sometimes reaches your ankles , waist and neck. But most of the time, you will be on land instead of in water.

There are 2 options if you choose Mae La Na cave : 2 hours for 300 THB or 4 hours for 500 THB. The time includes go and return. The difference is the 4 hours option allows you to see a waterfall inside the cave. I chose the 4 hours option. The waterfall is quite amazing :)

The other 2 caves I did not have time to explore as it was 4.30pm when I finished and I was also quite tired. There is no water in those caves.

This walk through the Mae La Na cave is not the normal sort of walk you would experience in a typical cave. There are a lot of rocks which you would need to navigate and watch your every step. You also need to sometimes walk into the water and there are also rocks in the water which you can’t see and may step on. You would need to be quite flexible as it is like rock climbing and hiking combined.

A guide would be waiting somewhere near and as soon as he sees you driving on the way to the cave ticketing booth he will follow you over :)

A guide is compulsory and he will hand you a headlight as the cave is totally dark inside. He is a local villager there and knows the path through the cave by heart. Try to follow his foot steps. He does not speak much English.

They will offer a pair of rubber shoes for loan for free. However, I have stepped on many stones and rocks inside and it’s quite uncomfortable as the sole is not thick. On the other hand, your sneakers or shoes will get wet and dirty and maybe even torn. I also suggest you can prepare a beach wear quick dry top and shorts which I did. You can also wear dri fit track pants to protect your legs from being cut by rocks if it happens.

The guide will carry a water proof bag and you can put your handphone inside his bag. When you arrive at certain highlights inside the cave, he can help you to take photos.

After choosing your program option and paying the fee, there is another 2.5 km distance to the caves. The path is steep and challenging. If you ride a motorbike over, you can follow him on your motorbike or you can ride pillion on his motorbike and leave your motorbike at the ticketing booth.

Mae La Na water cave is only open during dry season from November to May as the wafer will flood the cave in the wet season months.

Do not follow google map’s directions to reach this cave. The correct route is to go through Ban Jabo village and Mae La Na village. Follow the signs on the road as shown in the photos attached.

Extra : This area has quite a few caves including Tham Nam Lod cave. A good place to stay would be in Pang Mapha town instead of further away in Pai. There are some guesthouses to choose from."

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

Mae La Na Cave offers an adventurous experience, but the 4-hour trek is physically demanding and involves significant rock climbing and wading through water. In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Mae La Na Cave Experience

Mae La Na Cave offers an unforgettable adventure unlike typical cave tours. It's an active water cave, meaning you'll be wading through water that can reach your chest, depending on your height. The 4-hour trek is highly recommended as it leads to a stunning inner waterfall, a truly breathtaking sight. The cave floor is uneven, with rocks and slippery surfaces, making it feel like a combination of hiking and rock climbing. Reddit

Navigating Mae La Na requires a compulsory local guide. These guides are invaluable, possessing intimate knowledge of the cave's paths and ensuring your safety. They can also assist with taking photos, often carrying waterproof bags for your electronics. While free rubber shoes are provided, many visitors find them uncomfortable, so bringing your own water-friendly footwear is a good idea. Reddit

The cave is only accessible during the dry season (November to May) due to flooding risks in the wet season. The journey to the cave entrance itself is also part of the adventure, involving a steep and challenging 2.5 km path. This makes Mae La Na Cave a destination for those seeking an authentic and physically engaging exploration rather than a passive sightseeing experience. Reddit

What to Wear and Bring

Preparing for Mae La Na Cave means prioritizing practicality and comfort for an active, wet environment. Quick-dry clothing is essential. Think beachwear tops and shorts, or moisture-wicking track pants that can protect your legs from potential scrapes against rocks. You will get wet, so avoid cotton materials that stay damp. Reddit

Footwear is crucial. While the cave provides free loaner rubber shoes, reviews suggest they may not offer adequate comfort or grip for the challenging terrain. Many visitors recommend bringing your own water shoes or sturdy sandals that can handle being submerged and provide good traction. Ensure they are secure enough for climbing. Reddit

Beyond clothing and shoes, consider waterproofing your valuables. Your guide can often help by carrying your phone in a waterproof bag, allowing them to capture photos for you. It's also wise to stay hydrated before entering, as carrying a water bottle inside can be cumbersome when you need both hands for climbing. Reddit
