What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Karon Bazaar is a vibrant night market offering a wide array of shopping and delicious street food, with many visitors enjoying the lively atmosphere and the chance to negotiate for souvenirs. However, some reviews highlight significant ethical concerns regarding the display of marine life, prompting calls for more responsible practices.
"Nice to stroll and look at the items, make sure you first client then the prices are better, always negotiate on the price as everybody has the same items, go from stall to stall if need be, if not happy with the price walk, there is a lot of markets in this area, you will find the same item at a better price"

"Absolutely heartbreaking. I visited this market today, july 2025 and was shocked to see a literal baby shark cut in half and other marine life displayed like trophies. This isn't just disturbing, it's a reminder of how little respect some places still show toward ocean creatures.
This NEEDS to be illegal. Sharks are already disappearing from our oceans due to overfishing and cruelty like this. There is no justification for allowing this kind of display in a country that claims to care about wildlife and sustainability.
If you're traveling to Phuket, please don’t support markets or restaurants that sell sharks or rays. And to local authorities: do better. This is not culture this is destruction."

Ethical Considerations at Karon Bazaar
These reviews emphasize the need for greater respect towards ocean creatures, especially given the global decline in shark populations due to overfishing and cruelty. The sentiment is that this is not a reflection of authentic culture but rather destructive practices. Travelers are urged to be conscious consumers and avoid supporting businesses that engage in the sale of endangered or cruelly treated marine animals.
For those who wish to enjoy the market's offerings while being mindful of these issues, focusing on the vibrant food stalls, clothing, and handicraft vendors is a recommended approach. The community is advocating for local authorities to 'do better' and implement stricter regulations to protect marine wildlife, ensuring that Phuket's tourism aligns with sustainability and respect for nature.
