What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Reviews for car rentals in Bangkok, specifically Avis, are overwhelmingly negative, citing deceptive practices, undisclosed fees, and poor vehicle condition. Many travelers report being scammed, unable to pick up cars after payment, and receiving no refunds. While some acknowledge competitive pricing, the overall experience is described as unprofessional and stressful.
"Extremely poor experience.
Upon arrival, Avis refused to release the car due to requirements that were never disclosed during booking.
First, they demanded my original passport, despite this not being stated anywhere. My passport was legally held at the Chinese Embassy for a visa application. After wasting time, they finally agreed to accept a copy.
Next, they refused to accept my official Thai driver’s license shown via the DLT QR app, which is a government issued and commonly accepted digital license in Thailand. (Even airlines and the police accept this) They insisted on the physical card only.
After I went out of my way to have the original license sent to me, they then introduced yet another requirement: the car could only be released using a physical company credit card inserted into their machine (the company is US based)
They refused my own tap to pay card and said I needed a physical credit card to swipe.
None of this was communicated in advance.
Despite speaking with head office, no solution was offered. I wasted significant time and still left without a car.
I ultimately rented from another company for less money, full coverage, and zero hassle.
Highly unprofessional, poorly communicated, and not worth the stress. I would not recommend Avis Thailand to anyone."

"Reason for 3 stars.
Cheapest price from all website but the car quite old look like model more than 10 yrs with 180K km run. All function still working properly as it age.
If you just want cheap price and just can take you to destination then this is ok.
If you want more new model, suggest to pay more with other brand.
Note : even though I got member and can return late for 6 hrs. But this brance say you have to return not over 7pm. Otherwise you will get charged !!! It should say first at the website when I book it. !!!"

"BEWARE! In Bangkok, never ever rent a car from Avis Thailand!
Whilst you might think this is a well established car rental company across the world, the Avis Thailand company is managed by scammers.
I paid on their website for a 4 days car rental, but on the day I came to pick up the car they refused to hand me over the key because I didn’t have a credit card for the deposit (I had a debit card and cash, but they wanted a credit card, which was not specified when I made the booking online).
They never refunded me for the car rental , eventhough I could never pick it up.
I’ve claimed on their website in the “complaints” section, but no one ever got back to me.
I called several times, I even went in person to the head office, but staff refused to give me the contact of the manager. Next step, I’ll go to the police, that’s for sure!
Apparently I’m far from being the first person scammed, i should have read the Google Reviews, all the comments, this is absolutely embarrassing for them. And this leaves me wondering how they can even continue to operate openly, and continue scamming foreigners!
Shame on you Avis! You’re a total shame!
My first scam experience in Thailand in 3 years! Beware of Avis Thailand! You’ve been warned!"

Mastering Bangkok's Public Transport
For shorter distances or areas not directly served by the rail systems, taxis are abundant. It's crucial to insist on using the meter ('meter, please') to avoid overcharging. If a driver refuses, politely decline and find another. Tuk-tuks offer a quintessential Bangkok experience, but their prices are often negotiable and can be higher than taxis for longer distances. Always agree on the fare before starting your ride.
Ride-sharing apps like Grab are incredibly popular and offer a convenient way to book cars and even motorcycle taxis. They provide upfront pricing, eliminating the need for negotiation and offering a sense of security. For airport transfers, the Airport Rail Link from Suvarnabhumi (BKK) is highly recommended for its speed and affordability, connecting directly to the BTS network.
