Reviews Summary

Visitors find Pratu Chumphon to be an impressive and historically significant site, particularly as the last original city gate. Its proximity to the Tao Suranaree Monument makes it a convenient stop. Some visitors noted ongoing renovations during their visits, which slightly impacted the experience.

"Pratu Chumphon ( or Chumphon Gate ).

This old citygate here on the west side of the outskirts of the old city is the only one still standing of the 4 in total that was built around 1656, engineers from France helped to design the city plan and to build it.
It have had some renovation to restore it to it's orginal state.
Acually it was undergoing some renovations again it seems when I was here 2023 03 02, which was to bad because I couldn't really explore it up close.
But still looked to be in good shape and have a part of the old citywall as well.

The old town of Nakhon Ratchasima had a citywall around it with a area of roughly 1,000 by 1,700 square metres.
Also had a moat of which most still remains.
The other 3 citygates ( east, south and north ) have been rebuilt but not in the original shape instead in a more modern version.
Some sections of the old citywall can still be seen in a few places around the old moat.

I have a Youtube channel with videos from different forts & bunkers that I've filmed with both drone and normal camera.
Hope you'll check it out 🙂

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Historical Context of Pratu Chumphon

Pratu Chumphon, or Chumphon Gate, stands as a significant historical artifact in Nakhon Ratchasima. Built around 1656, it is the sole surviving original city gate of the four that once protected the old town. The city's plan and fortifications were notably influenced by French engineers, a collaboration that shaped the urban landscape of the era. Reddit

While the gate itself is a marvel, it's important to note that it has undergone renovations to preserve its original state. Visitors in early 2023 observed ongoing restoration work, which might affect close-up access. However, even with potential scaffolding, its imposing presence and historical weight are undeniable. The gate is a tangible link to the city's past defenses and its strategic importance. Reddit

Beyond the gate, remnants of the old city wall and a moat can still be found in various places around the old town. While the other three gates have been rebuilt in more modern styles, Pratu Chumphon offers a unique opportunity to connect with the authentic architecture of the 17th century. Reddit

Exploring the Old Town's Defenses

The old town of Nakhon Ratchasima was once encircled by a substantial city wall and moat, covering an area of approximately 1,000 by 1,700 square meters. Pratu Chumphon represents the westernmost of these original gates. Reddit

While Pratu Chumphon is the only original gate, the other three gates (east, south, and north) have been reconstructed. These modern versions offer a visual representation of the city's layout but lack the historical authenticity of the west gate. Visitors can still find sections of the old city wall in several locations around the perimeter of the former moat, providing further context to the scale of the historical fortifications. Reddit

The moat, though largely diminished, still exists in parts and contributes to understanding the defensive strategy of the ancient city. Exploring these remnants allows for a deeper appreciation of Nakhon Ratchasima's historical development and its past as a fortified settlement. Reddit
