The Fate of the Bangkok Corrections Museum
However, the story doesn't end there. Travelers have noted that the museum's exhibits have likely been relocated to Nonthaburi, a province north of Bangkok. This new location, situated opposite Bangkwang Central Prison, offers a continuation of the museum's mission to educate the public about the country's correctional past. Visitors seeking to experience these historical displays should verify the current status and exact location of the Nonthaburi Prison Museum before planning their trip.
Even with the museum's closure, Rommaninat Park itself retains a certain historical significance. Visitors can still explore the park grounds and observe the imposing guard towers and remnants of cell blocks from the outside. These structures serve as a visual reminder of the site's former use and can still offer a compelling, albeit external, experience for those interested in the darker aspects of Bangkok's history.
Navigating to the Nonthaburi Prison Museum
Finding the exact spot involves a bit of navigation. You'll need to walk past the main gates of Bangkwang Central Prison. Continue along the prison wall until you reach the far end. The museum should be on your left, approximately opposite the last watchtower. This approach offers a unique perspective, allowing visitors to see the operational prison alongside the historical museum.
While the journey might require a bit more effort than visiting the original site, the opportunity to explore the detailed exhibits on Thailand's prison history makes it a worthwhile endeavor for those seeking unusual and educational experiences in the Bangkok region.
