The Bangkok BRT is a bus rapid transit system in Bangkok, Thailand. Out of the five routes that were originally planned, only one line has been in operation since 2010, with all the other routes cancelled. At the end of April 2017, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) announced the whole system might be cancelled due to low ridership and financial losses, however a subsequent opinion survey c...

Reviews Summary

Travelers find Bangkok's bus system incredibly affordable and extensive, offering a genuine local experience. However, expect potential chaos, traffic delays, and occasional issues with ticketing or onboard facilities. While some services are modern, others are basic, so managing expectations is key.

"We didn’t get our tickets and also NO refund. Why? Because one of our passports was still at the embassy for another visa application process and therefore they couldn’t find any other solution to let us go on the bus, even though we had a copy of our passport. Then they showed zero intention of helping us + even though we were there BEFORE the bus leaves they would not want to give us a refund. Luckily we could jump on another bus which had a way better service, so if I were you I would go for another company!"

"Purchased the cheapest ticket I could for a round trip Bangkok to Chiang Mai. The ride itself went pretty smoothly, but the process to get on the bus was a bit unorganized

I purchased my tickets on the website in advance and didn’t have any issues until I got an email a few days later that my payment hadn’t worked and my reservations were cancelled — although it definitely did process because I had the charge appear on my statement. The email said to contact if it was incorrect and so I did, but I didn’t receive any reply despite reaching out 2-3 times both through email and phone. Having not gotten any any response to the issue and the fully processed charge on my card, I was prepared to have a long conversation the day of at the ticket claim desk. However, my reservation was easily accepted and I got my ticket with no problems

After the ticket concern was resolved, another concern emerged. Understandably, the bus was delayed. Bangkok regularly has intense traffic, and my trip time directly overlapped with rush hour. The issue came with the fact that no announcements about the delay were made and the entirety of people booked for this bus were confused and concerned about when the bus would board/arrive/depart. None of the many screens in the bus terminal were devoted to the bus schedules. Lots of people, including myself had to resort to going back and forth from the front desk to see what the status was. About 40 minutes after the original departure time, the bus arrived and began boarding with no big problems. We then departed around 1 hour past planned departure.

The bus made one rest stop for food (at your own expense, as it was a day bus). They did supply some small snacks and regular bottled water. We arrived in Chiang Mai about 2 hours past the original planned arrival time

Bottom line: don’t have anything planned after your bus trip cause there are a lot of inevitable delays

P.S. the bus terminal does have a prayer room if that’s something you require during your journey"

"I booked the bus bkk to Bangkok from bangkok bus line company . The bus toilet smell was so bad during the whole trip and there is no staff taking care of it. I have booked green line bus from Chiang Mai to Mae sot before. The staff usually take care of toilet smell after the passenger used it. Plus the driver and staff from bkk bus line company are rude."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Understanding Bangkok's Bus Network

Bangkok's bus system is a sprawling network operated primarily by the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA). It's one of the most affordable ways to get around the city, with fares for non-air-conditioned buses starting at just 8 Baht. TikTok The system includes a variety of bus types, from basic, open-windowed vehicles to more modern, air-conditioned coaches. While the sheer number of routes can be overwhelming, apps like Moovit have become indispensable tools for travelers trying to navigate this complex web. TikTok Many locals rely on these buses for their daily commute, making it an authentic way to experience the city's pulse.

The Bangkok BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) is a separate entity, designed to offer a more streamlined experience with dedicated lanes. However, its limited network and discussions about its future mean it's not as comprehensive as the general bus system. TikTok For tourists, the Hop-On Hop-Off buses offer a curated sightseeing experience, allowing you to visit major attractions without the hassle of deciphering local routes. TikTok These double-decker buses provide a comfortable way to see the city's highlights, though they are a more expensive option than regular public transport.

When using the local buses, be prepared for a dynamic journey. Traffic in Bangkok is legendary, so expect delays, especially during peak hours. [^Review] Boarding can also be an adventure; sometimes you need to flag down the bus and be ready to jump on quickly. TikTok Despite the potential chaos, the affordability and extensive reach of the bus system make it an essential part of any budget-conscious traveler's itinerary in Bangkok. TikTok

Intercity Bus Travel: Comfort and Cost

For journeys beyond Bangkok, the city's bus terminals serve as gateways to the rest of Thailand. Companies offer a range of services, from basic seating to luxurious 'business class' options, making it possible to travel long distances comfortably and affordably. TikTok Night buses are particularly popular for traveling between major cities like Bangkok and Chiang Mai, allowing you to save on accommodation costs while covering ground. TikTok

Booking intercity bus tickets is often best done in advance, especially for popular routes or during peak travel seasons. Websites like 12Go Asia are frequently recommended for their ease of use and variety of options. TikTok While the ride itself can be smooth, travelers should be aware that delays are common due to traffic and road conditions. [^Review] It's wise to build buffer time into your schedule and avoid making tight connections immediately after your bus arrival. [^Review]

Onboard amenities can vary significantly. Many long-distance buses provide snacks, water, blankets, and even USB charging ports. [^Review] However, the condition of onboard facilities, such as toilets, can be inconsistent, with some travelers reporting unpleasant experiences. [^Review] Despite these potential drawbacks, the cost-effectiveness and convenience of intercity buses make them a compelling choice for exploring Thailand beyond the capital.

Navigating Fares and Ticketing

The fare system for Bangkok's buses can be a bit of a puzzle for newcomers. The most basic and cheapest option is paying cash directly to the conductor or driver on the non-air-conditioned buses, with fares often around 8-14 Baht. TikTok These buses are a quintessential Bangkok experience, offering a raw and unfiltered glimpse into daily life. For those seeking more comfort, air-conditioned buses typically charge between 15-25 Baht, depending on the route and distance. TikTok

Some newer bus services, like the Thai Smile Bus, utilize a 'Hop Card' system. TikTok This rechargeable card can be purchased from bus conductors and tapped near a reader when boarding. It simplifies the payment process and can be more convenient for frequent riders. However, it's essential to ensure you have enough credit on your card before boarding. Travelers have also encountered issues with online payment systems for advance bookings, sometimes leading to cancelled reservations despite successful charges. [^Review] It's always a good idea to have a backup plan or be prepared to sort out payment discrepancies at the bus terminal.

When it comes to refunds, policies can be quite rigid. [^Review] Missing a bus or not having the correct documentation can result in the loss of your fare. Therefore, understanding the terms and conditions of your ticket purchase is crucial. For intercity travel, booking through reputable online platforms can streamline the process, but always double-check confirmation emails and be ready to present your booking details upon boarding.
