What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Pongwe Beach is lauded for its serene, uncrowded atmosphere and exceptional dining, particularly its fresh seafood. Visitors appreciate the peaceful environment, beautiful scenery, and attentive staff. However, some find it isolated, and beach drink service can be slow. Mosquitoes are also a common nuisance.
"Pongwe is the kind of hotel we will dream about going back to. We had just finished a tented camp safari before we flew there and were so relieved to have the most incredible meals of the entire trip. I couldn’t get over the freshness of all the food but especially the seafood. It was obvious they worked with locals as even all fruit and veg seemed to be local, not to mention the dreamy spices. We intentionally ate all meals at the hotel for our three nights because it was so good. The live entertainment in the bar was also amazing. The staff even remembered our room, names and usual drink orders! Beach drink service is slow but it’s worth it to not constantly be asked if you need anything and it was also a very quiet time of year we were there. The upside being the beach and pool were soooo quiet and we had the water all to ourselves a lot of the time! Such clear water which helped for seeing jellyfish in advance. I loved our room and the thoughtful touches of robes and straw hats and ended up buying a bunch of the robes they make on site to take home as souvenirs too. Make sure you take advantage of the French press delivery in the mornings to your room to start the day right especially if your room has an ocean view. The mosquitoes are terrible here even if you can’t see them - spray up!! The hotel arranged the private driver and guide for us to Stonetown and it was more expensive than other local options but was exceptional and having unlimited time with the guide meant we could leisurely shop for souvenirs without worrying about meeting the driver. Definitely worth the extra cost for the flexibility and they know all the best guides as well! Internet was spotty but who cares you should unplug here!"

"We were waking the beach from our lodge up the way and wanted to grab a bite, they wanted us to sign a commitment to spend 25 USD a person… and a whole fish is 70USD. What a complete rip off and how pretentious. We decided to move in so they followed us down through the lobby bc…I don’t even know what they were afraid of. No wonder the place was empty! We went back to our lodge (which is rated higher) and had a non-pretentious meal there. Talk about trying to take advantage of tourists…"
