What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Kilimanjaro International Airport is a functional, albeit small, gateway to Northern Tanzania. Visitors appreciate the potential for stunning Mount Kilimanjaro views and the convenience of its location between Arusha and Moshi. However, the immigration and departure processes can be slow and congested, and accessibility is limited.
"Though small, the airport boasts a steady flow of traffic, providing a lively atmosphere. The spacious duty-free shop offers plenty of choices for travelers looking to pick up souvenirs or last-minute items before their journey. A charming café is available, perfect for unwinding and enjoying a moment of relaxation before departure.
The airport itself is well-kept, with clean facilities that reflect a commitment to maintenance. However, it's important to note that accessibility could be a concern, as the premises are not equipped for wheelchair access. Strategically located midway between Arusha and Moshi, this airport serves as a convenient gateway between the two cities, making it an ideal stop for travelers in the region."

"I recently had the opportunity to travel through Kilimanjaro International Airport in Tanzania, and I wanted to share a brief review based on my experience.
Arrival Experience:
When I arrived at JRO, the first thing I noticed was the beautiful view of Mount Kilimanjaro on the way in—it’s a stunning sight that sets the tone for your Tanzanian adventure. The immigration process, however, was a bit slow. As someone arriving without a visa, I had to go through several steps: making the visa fee payment, getting my photo taken, and then fingerprinting. It took close to an hour, which is something to keep in mind if you're arriving during a busy period. I’d recommend applying for a visa in advance if possible, just to save time and avoid the queues.
Facilities & Amenities:
The airport is relatively small but well-organized. It was clean, and basic amenities were available, including free Wi-Fi and a few charging points. After a long flight, this was definitely appreciated. There are restaurants and shops inside the terminal where you can grab a snack or buy souvenirs, though the variety is somewhat limited.
For those with long layovers or who prefer extra comfort, there are lounges like the Twiga and Tanzanite lounges. I didn’t personally use them this time, but I’ve heard they offer food, drinks, showers, and a more relaxed atmosphere.
Staff & Service:
The airline staff and immigration officers were professional, though not particularly warm. Some travelers might find the staff a bit indifferent, but I didn’t face any major issues. Directions and signage in the terminal are fairly simple, so it's easy to find your way.
Departure Experience:
During departure, I made sure to arrive a few hours early, which turned out to be a good decision. The check-in process was a bit disorganized due to multiple flights leaving around the same time. Security screening was straightforward, but the waiting area near the gates did get crowded. I’d suggest finding a seat early if you’re flying economy.
Once inside the terminal, there are a few options for food and shopping, including local crafts and duty-free items. Be prepared for higher prices than what you'd find in town, as is common in most airports.
Transportation:
Getting to and from the airport is relatively easy. Taxis and hotel shuttles are readily available, especially to places like Arusha and Moshi. I arranged a transfer through my hotel ahead of time, which went smoothly and took about an hour to reach Arusha city.
Final Impressions:
Overall, Kilimanjaro International Airport is functional and safe, with the essentials covered for travelers. It may not be the most modern or efficient airport, but it does its job well as a gateway to one of the most beautiful regions in Africa. With a bit of patience and preparation, your experience here can be a pleasant one."

"Good Airport. But short on staff. You will have problems of congestion if you have many flights leaving at the same time. Very clean runway area. Added bonus: you get to walk to the plane."

Gateway to Adventure: KIA's Role
The airport's proximity to these natural wonders means that the breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro itself are often the first or last thing visitors see, setting a spectacular tone for their Tanzanian experience. This makes KIA a crucial hub for tourism in Northern Tanzania, facilitating the influx of international visitors eager to witness the country's incredible wildlife and landscapes.
For those arriving, the airport serves as a crucial first impression. While it may be smaller than major international hubs, its functionality and the immediate visual impact of Kilimanjaro aim to provide a welcoming introduction to the region. The efficiency of arrival and departure processes, though sometimes subject to delays, is key to ensuring a smooth start or end to a memorable African safari or climb.
Navigating KIA: Arrival and Departure
Departing from KIA can also present challenges, primarily due to potential congestion. With multiple flights often scheduled around the same time, check-in and security lines can become lengthy. It's recommended to arrive at the airport several hours before your flight to allow ample time for these processes. While the airport may not be the most modern, its staff are generally professional, and the overall experience is manageable with a bit of preparation. The opportunity to see Mount Kilimanjaro on your way out adds a memorable final touch to your journey.
Amenities and Services at KIA
While basic amenities like free Wi-Fi and charging points are available, it's important to note that the airport's accessibility for wheelchairs is limited. Travelers should also be aware that prices for goods and services within the airport, particularly in the shops and cafes, tend to be higher than in local towns, which is typical for airport environments. Despite its size, KIA aims to equip travelers with the necessities for a smooth transition before their onward journey.
