What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors generally find the National Museum of Tajikistan to be a worthwhile cultural experience, highlighting its impressive collection of historical artifacts, art, and natural wonders, especially the Buddha in Nirvana statue. However, some note inconsistencies in English descriptions and photography policies, along with a lack of Western-style toilets for women.
"A nice museum about Tajikistan. I would definitely welcome more English descriptions for better understanding. The museum was clean and pleasantly air-conditioned, which was welcome during the hot summer (40°C) when I was there.
I would see room for improvement in the IT section, where most of the touch screens with information were either turned off or on the Windows home screen, which contrasts with the fairly thorough inspection of items at the entrance - they check that you are not bringing anything dangerous into the building, but you could easily access their IT systems"

"There is Art and history with a sizable sculpture exhibit. Much much better than any of the other museums, though by international standards 3/5 would be generous. The ticket is a reasonable 35.00 Somoni. Wouldn't recommend unless super bored. The only thing that truly awed me was the smallest Quran in the form of a pendant. This was amazing."

"Entrance for a measly 35 somoni (though the cashier tried to then charge me 40 somoji when I asked about English translations). An excellent English-speaking young lady greets you upon entry. The ground floor has beautiful ceramics, I guess all recent bc there are no dates?! The first floor has many busts and some interesting textural pieces but the historical items in several rooms are of most interest. Unfortunately it seems this is where photos aren’t allowed?? Utterly ridiculous considering I have been to museums in 80+ countries and photos are OF COURSE allowed. There are room attendants that wander and monitor. Still, I took some photos and think a few of them might have known and didn’t care?! Very confusing.
There’s also a circular room with gifts given to the president. Not very interesting save for the very centre of the room having the oldest historical items - beautiful gold jewellery and a crown- in the museum. Photos absolutely prohibited here and an attendant made sure of that.
So taking off a whole two stars for that AND NO WESTERN TOILETS for ladies. Only squats 🤮🤮🤮🤮 gross.
There are English translations for everything."

Exploring Tajikistan's Rich History
Beyond ancient history, the museum features exhibits on natural history, displaying Tajikistan's rich mineral wealth and geological formations. There are also sections dedicated to art and traditional crafts, offering insights into the nation's creative expressions. A unique aspect is the room displaying gifts presented to the president, which, despite photography restrictions, contains some of the museum's oldest and most precious historical items, including exquisite gold jewelry and a crown.
While the museum provides a deep dive into Tajikistan's heritage, some visitors note a lack of extensive English descriptions for all exhibits. However, the visual displays and the sheer significance of the artifacts, like the smallest Quran in the form of a pendant, make it a compelling visit for understanding the country's identity.
Navigating Museum Policies and Visitor Experience
Another aspect that impacts visitor comfort, particularly for female visitors, is the availability of restrooms. Reports indicate that only squat toilets are provided for women, which can be a significant drawback for those accustomed to Western-style facilities. Additionally, some visitors have noted that the IT section's interactive screens were often non-functional, detracting from the modern presentation of information.
Despite these points, the presence of helpful staff, such as the English-speaking young lady mentioned by one reviewer, can significantly enhance the visit. The museum's commitment to showcasing its national treasures, even with these minor challenges, makes it a worthwhile destination for cultural exploration.
