Reviews Summary

The Zhuilu Old Trail is overwhelmingly praised for its spectacular, unique views and the exhilarating experience of hiking along its narrow cliffside path. Many hikers found it challenging but incredibly rewarding, highlighting the historical significance and natural beauty. However, the trail's exposure to heights and the demanding initial climb are significant considerations for potential visitors.

"Incredible views, definitely recommend this hike. Hiked in a pair of trail runners and it was more than enough. Not too technical, and not too intense of elevation gain. Guides are great about taking it slow and steady for everybody in the group"

Cody

"Fantastic trail with insanely beautiful views of the steep cliffside and the hualien mountains.

However make no mistake, this is a challenging trail even though it is only 2 to 2.5 hrs one-way.

The ascent requires good physical condition to complete. There are endless stairs in the first km which by themselves are enough to exhaust you. The terrain becomes rougher in the second km and there are several sections where you must hold onto a rope for support to traverse the rocky terrain. Finally the last km is along the steep cliffside which offers majestic views of the mountain scenery above the clouds. However there are few railings along the trail so it is not recommended if you have a fear of heights.

Finally, the descent is no easy feat either. Your knees will take a good beating and you will need to have good balance and flexibility to navigate the rocky terrain downwards.

You should bring enough water as the temperature is hot and the trail is sure to make you sweat buckets. You definitely do not want to be dehydrated halfway when you're walking the steep cliffsides.

Please judge your own physical condition carefully before attempting this trail!

Finally, permits are required and you must apply on the website beforehand. A maximum of 96 people are allowed on the trail for each day. On the day, you must bring your passport for verification, and show the email they sent to confirm the permit.

You must start the trail between 7 to 10 am, and also PLEASE search in advance for any road closures in the taroko gorge highway 8.

We were supposed to drive to hualien from cingjing the day before our hike to our accommodation in hualien but there was a road closure at 114km mark on highway 8 (guanyuan) to repair the road after rock falls / landslides. So... We had to take a 6hr detour to yilan and drive south from yilan to hualien. Fortunately, there were no road closures to drive in from hualien to the entrance of the zhuilu old trail. The road closures only started in March, and it changes all the time, even the locals are not sure. So, please double check and plan your travel in advance!!!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Thrill of the Zhuilu Old Trail

The Zhuilu Old Trail is renowned for its dramatic cliffside path, a narrow track carved directly into the marble walls of Taroko Gorge. This trail offers an exhilarating experience, with sheer drops and breathtaking panoramas that have captivated hikers for years. It's a testament to the ingenuity of its builders, who created a passage through seemingly impassable terrain. Instagram+1

The trail's history is as fascinating as its scenery. Originally built by the indigenous Truku people and later expanded by the Japanese during their colonial rule, it served as a vital route through the gorge. Today, it's a popular, albeit challenging, hiking destination that provides a unique perspective on Taiwan's natural beauty and historical past. Instagram

Visitors often describe the hike as an 'adrenaline rush' combined with 'insanely beautiful views.' The combination of physical exertion and the sheer scale of the gorge creates a memorable and often awe-inspiring experience. However, it's crucial to be prepared for the physical demands and to respect the trail's inherent risks. Reddit

Navigating the Zhuilu Old Trail: Permits and Safety

Securing a permit is the first and most critical step for hiking the Zhuilu Old Trail. The daily quota of 96 hikers is strictly enforced for safety and conservation. Applications open two months in advance for Taiwanese citizens and can be highly competitive, while foreigners may have more flexibility but should still apply early. Failure to obtain a permit means you won't be allowed to start the hike. Reddit

Safety is paramount on this trail. The narrow path, often only a meter wide, with steep drop-offs, is not for the faint of heart or those with a severe fear of heights. While some sections have ropes for support, there are few railings. Hikers are advised to wear sturdy footwear with good grip, such as trail runners, and to carry ample water. InstagramReddit

Before embarking on your hike, always check for road closures on Highway 8, as landslides or maintenance can significantly impact access to the gorge and the trailhead. The trail itself requires a good level of physical fitness, particularly the initial steep ascent with numerous stairs. Plan your visit carefully, assess your capabilities, and be prepared for an unforgettable adventure. TikTokReddit
