Reviews Summary

Pei Tian Temple is a highly regarded, historic Mazu temple known for its spiritual significance, particularly the 'flower rewarding' ritual for couples seeking children. Visitors appreciate its free entry, parking, and the vibrant atmosphere during festivals like Mazu's birthday. Some find car parking limited during peak times.

"Pei Tian Temple, a Taoist Temple, in Puzi Town, Chiayi County, is a famous and popular Mazu Temple in South Taiwan for its long history of more than 330 years for worshipping Mazu, for its praying-and-rewarding-flower practices for couples who pray for having babies or for pregnancy, and for its reception role for other Mazu temples in various cities or counties in Taiwan, to bring and to parade their Mazu deities in Pei Tian Temple for the worship practices. However, the Temple does NOT offer praying-and-rewarding-flower practices for couples who pray for having babies or for pregnancy in the Month of July of farmer calendar, because month of July is traditionally considered a month to worship for the deceased and the Ghost.

Couples who made pray at the Temple and were rewarded for either white or red flowers, and white flowers indicate the possibility of having boy, while red flowers indicate the possibility of having baby girls in pregnancy. Because of belief and practice of praying and flower rewarding for having a baby possibility at this Temple, this Temple is popular for young to early middle-aged couples or young women who want to have babies.

When other Mazu temples in other cities or counties bring their Mazu deities and parade and worship in Pei Tian Temple in Puzi Town, it is NOT uncommon for the visiting temples to have Taoist Sharman or female Sharman ceremony in front of Pei Tian Temple at first and then inside the Temple's main worship hall. Taoist Sharman generally would carry and pray with the Visiting Temple's flag, Taoist Sharman knife and practice instrument. It is NOT unusual for the Taoist Sharman, both male and female, to use knife for the practice and injure himself or herself to show the sincerity, power, and attachment and enlightenment of the Mazu. As the videos, dated June 26, 2022, indicate the ceremony and practice of the female Taoist Sharman practice when a Mazu Temple in Chongher Town, New Taipei City, brought back its Mazu Deity to Pei Tian Temple for the worship practice.

The Temple is free for access, including bathroom and parking [it has two parking lots in short walking distance for the visitors].

May 11 and May 12, 2023, the Temple will hold its celebration and other religious activities, including parade, to celebrate Matzu birthday, which is May 12, 2023 [farmer calendar March 23]. Small-scale Parade around the Temple had been held on May 11, 2023, and the larger-scale parade at Puzi will be held on May 12, 2023."
