Reviews Summary

Travelers rave about the Hualien Coastal Bikeway, particularly the point-to-point bike rental experience from Hualien to Taitung. The quality of the bikes, the ease of rental, and the exceptional customer service from shops like Giant are frequently highlighted. While the scenery is consistently praised, some note the need for clear communication regarding drop-off locations in Taitung.

"An amazing service from Yusen - great bike ! Yusen did a super quick check on the bike for me - and I was underway within 30 mins… the bike was quick - and I was able to do the point to point from Hualien down to Taitung in a day… the weather was challenging (Typhoon Dana)… but the bike was perfect !"

Richard McLaughlin

"Rented our bike in Hualien, and spent the next three days biking to Taitung.

The rental was super easy to sort out and they were ready for us on both ends of the trip.

We did have a rather large mechanical problem (no fault of our own) with one of the bikes on our way through the mountain pass near Ruisui, which resulted in one of the bikes being completely unusable for most of the day. This is still a 5 star review because the folks at the Hualien store moved heaven and earth to get us on the roadworthy again, and we were able to arrive in Taitung on time!

They also gave us really delicious food recommendations."

Jesse Ward-Bond

"My rental experience was kinda serendipitous. I stumbled upon the shop, entered it and told the shopkeeper what I wanted. And I wanted to cycle and do some sightseeing quite far away from the town proper. They had me covered, providing me with a bike that would both take me far and allow me to actually do some pedalling. The bike had a battery plus all the perks that come with basically any Giant bike - quality being the first one that comes to mind. I ended up doing more than a 100 km on the day and returned tired but refreshed and full of memories of those great views. One of the shopkeepers - Yushen - speaks nice English and the guys will go the extra mile to help you with whatever you might need for a great cycling trip. Thank you, Giant and Yushen, in particular, for making my day!"

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

Cycling the Hualien Coastal Bikeway can be a fantastic family adventure. Opt for electric-assist bikes if available, which can make longer distances and any inclines much more manageable for younger riders or less experienced cyclists. Ensure the rental shop can provide bikes suitable for all family members, including smaller sizes if needed.

Consider breaking the journey into shorter, more manageable segments. Instead of the full Hualien to Taitung route, focus on a scenic day trip along a particularly beautiful stretch. Pack plenty of snacks and water, and plan for frequent stops at beaches or parks where kids can play. The ease of access to many coastal points means you can tailor the experience to your family's pace and energy levels.

💰 Budget Travelers

While bike rentals are an investment, the Hualien Coastal Bikeway offers a cost-effective way to experience Taiwan's stunning scenery. Look for rental packages that include all necessary accessories to avoid extra charges. Booking in advance online might sometimes offer better rates.

To save on food, explore local markets and small eateries in the towns along the route rather than tourist-focused restaurants. Utilizing local trains for certain segments (if you have a bike bag) can also be cheaper than continuous rental or private transport. Camping or staying in budget guesthouses in towns like Taitung can further reduce accommodation costs.
