What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Chiayi Cheng Huang Temple for its historical significance, serene atmosphere, and the helpfulness of its staff. It's noted as a peaceful sanctuary, offering a glimpse into Taiwanese folk religion and ancient inscriptions. Some mention it could benefit from maintenance, but its quiet charm and cultural value are highly appreciated.
"Chiayi Cheng Huang Temple [Chinese as- 嘉義城隍廟), Chiayi City, worships the City God or the City God of Chiayi, in Taiwan. The temple was believed to be built in 1715 and it is one of the oldest temples in south Taiwan. The temple was designated as for national monument status in 2015.
The Temple has many historical monuments or Chinese writing or calligraphy inscribed on wall's stone sculptures near entrance gates. These writings or calligraphies were mainly written by the members of the earlier migrant clans in Chiayi regions, who helped funding for the rebuild or upgrade of the Temple about 100 years ago.
Like other temples, in Taiwan, which are NOT Famous for the tourists, the Temple generally does NOT have many worshippers, even though it is located near largest Night Market of the Chiayi City, Wenhua Road Night Market. The writer felt surprised because, like Taipei Cheng Huang Temple or City God Temple of Taipei, City God Temple of Chiayi also repositions itself as matching making god for the lovers and couples [formerly it was functioned and worshipped as judicial temple]. But, it does not attract many younger worshippers or visitors for praying for their relations.
But, because it is so quiet without other visitors or other worshippers most of the time, it can be privileged for visiting the temple and viewing its collection of religious artifices without being rushed.
The staff who works at reception desk is very friendly, patient, and, above all, very knowledgeable for explaining and showing Temple's history, art piece, building structure, etc."

"Impressive temple, though due it’s age the ceiling can hardly be seen, and it could do some maintenance, still worth a visit and to have a quiet moment of reflection."

"One of the biggest indigenous religious center in Yunlin + Chiayi + Tainan area. The temple is also a national historic monument as well. The temple has undergone various renovations and modifications, however the original building is still kept in its (almost) original state. There are no parking around, so you'll need to park your car somewhere else and walk to the temple."
