Reviews Summary

Ulucanlar Prison Museum is a profoundly impactful and eye-opening experience, offering a raw glimpse into a significant period of Turkish history. Visitors are consistently moved by the realistic recreations, sound effects, and preserved artifacts that convey the harsh realities of prison life, particularly for political prisoners. While emotionally intense and not suitable for children, it's highly recommended for adults seeking a deeper understanding of the past. TikTokReddit+1

"It's worth visiting this museum because it has some political significance, which is still pertinent to the current situation in Turkey. This prison hosted some of the prominent Turkish writers, journalists, playwrights, politicians along with other real and perceived criminals. The prison therefore is known for its political prisoners.

While the building is of the 20th century it may not be attractive historically. It mainly draws an interest in the conditions the prisoners lived in while being held there.

The museum allows its visitors to see the wards of different sizes and categories. Some wax statues are placed at some spots to depict a realistic view. Visitors can experience hearing shouting voices from torture rooms and the tiny meeting rooms as well as bunk beds and even the hamam.

It was nice to see some of the belongings of prisoners preserved for visitors as well as newspaper articles and letters of those times as evidence of high profile imprisonment cases and political battles.

The tickets are fairly priced. As of June 2025 the adult ticket is 60 TL."

"This place is one of the most intense and eye-opening places I’ve visited in Ankara. It’s not your typical museum—it actually used to be a real prison, and they’ve preserved it in a way that you really feel the weight of the stories inside. You walk through actual cells, isolation rooms, and execution chambers. There are personal belongings of prisoners, letters, and sound effects that recreate what life was like inside.

The museum does a great job showing the human side of history—how political prisoners, writers, and everyday people lived and suffered here. It’s emotional, sometimes haunting, but also very powerful. Definitely not a “fun” visit, but 100% worth it if you want to understand a deeper part of Turkish history.

Tip: Go with some time and an open mind. It’s the kind of place that sticks with you."

"Today, I visited the old Qazavi Prison in Ankara. The prison has six halls with around 40 bunk beds, small courtyards where prisoners once got fresh air, and four solitary confinement cells. The kitchen and bathrooms were in poor condition, reflecting the harsh environment. The walls display photos of former inmates, adding to the historical yet somber atmosphere. The most unsettling part was the gallows and the list of those executed here. There is also an old meeting hall. This site is for adults only and offers a deep but heavy look into the past."
